Methyl palmitate

Vitamin A palmitate [79-81-2] (3), a commercially important form of the vitamin, is produced from vitamin A acetate (2) via a transesterification reaction with methyl palmitate. En2ymatic preparation of the palmitate from the acetate has also been described (22). 

The periodate-permanganate method used was based on a method described previously [105], but three changes from the original published procedure were found to be necessary. A sample size of 50 mg was taken for all oxidations. The same quantities of oxidant, potassium carbonate, and sodium bisulfite (26 ml, 45 mg, 1.06 g, respectively) were used for all samples. An inert marker (5 mg) of methyl palmite or stearate was added to all samples prior to oxidation to serve as a rough check on the completeness of oxidation and the recovery of fragments. 

The phase behavior of a-ester sulfonates has been studied in detail with methyl laurate and methyl palmitate [58]. In both cases, at higher temperatures, as the surfactant concentration increases, there is a transition from an isotropic solution to a hexagonal liquid crystalline phase and finally, at high surfactant concentrations, to a lamellar liquid crystal (Fig. 4). A powdered soap-based laundry detergent contains 44% tallow soap, 18% sodium salt of a-sulfonated 1 1 methyl stearate-methyl palmitate mixture, 9% sodium silicate, 10% Na2S04, 2.5% ethoxylated cocoethanolamide, 1.4 cellulose, 0.2% fluorescent whitener, 0.7% enzyme, 0.5% perfume, and 5% water [77]. 

C12 to C20, primarily Ci6 to ( is), used as surface lubricants in the manufacture of food-contact articles. The method, which uses ethyl palmitate (Eastman Chemicals No. 1575 Red Label) as an internal standard, has been validated at 200 ppm total FAME [185]. Other FAME standards (methyl palmitate, methyl stearate, methyl oleate, methyl linoleate and methyl linolenate) are available (Applied Science Laboratories) [116], Worked out examples of additive determinations are given in the Food Additives Analytical Manual [116], which also describes a great many of indirect food additives, such as BHA, BHT, TBHQ, l-chloro-2-propanol, DLTDP, fatty acid methyl esters, w-heptyl-p-hydroxybenzoate, propyl-gallate, sodium benzoate, sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate, sorbitol and phenolic antioxidants. EPA methods 606 and 8060 describe the CGC separation of phthalate esters (direct injection) (cf. Figure 4.2).

Of the early references to the preparation of methyl myristate and methyl palmitate, few are of preparative value. Methyl myristate can be prepared by the fractional distillation of the methyl esters from ucuhuba fat4 and from cocoanut oil.5-6 Methyl palmitate can be prepared in a similar manner from cocoanut oil6 and from bayberry wax.7...

METHYL MYRISTATE AND METHYL PALMITATE AND THE CORRESPONDING ACIDS... 

The esters are fractionally distilled through a suitable fractionating column (Note 2). A second fractionation is then made so that each successive fraction is added to the distilling flask after the temperature has reached the upper limit for the fraction being collected. There is obtained 170-190 g. of methyl myris-tate, b.p. 9i-94°/o-5 mm., ii2-ii6°/i mm., or i57-i62°/iomm., and 170-190 g. of methyl palmitate, b.p. ii5-ii8°/o.5 mm., i29-i33°/i mm., or i8o-i83°/xo mm. (Notes 3, 4, 5, and 6). 

The methyl myristate obtained (% 1.4353) showed a melting point of 19° when at equilibrium with the liquid. The methyl palmitate ( d 1.4391 when supercooled) gave a melting point of 29.5°. 

Myristic and palmitic acids can be obtained from their esters by the procedure in Org. Syn. Coll. Vol. 1, 371. From roo g. of methyl myristate is obtained 85-89 g. (90-95 per cent of the theoretical amount) of colorless myristic acid melting at 52-53°. From 100 g. of methyl palmitate is obtained 84-88 g. (90-95 per cent of the theoretical amount) of colorless palmitic acid melting at 62-63°.

Similar investigations with the related species Tegenaria pagana and Tegenaria domestica (Trabalon et al., 1997) determined that males of both species reacted to attractive females with longer contact times compared with that for unattractive or solvent-washed females. The response was species specific, and when pentane extracts were partitioned between pentane and methanol, most of the activity was found in the methanol fraction.
