Lanolins derivatives

Uses of Wool Grease. The uses of wool grease, lanolin, and lanolin derivatives are many, ranging from pharmaceuticals and cosmetics (qv) to printing inks (qv), mst preventatives, and lubricants (see Lubrication and lubricants). [Pg.355]

The anhydrous petrolatum base may be made more miscible with water through the use of an anhydrous liquid lanolin derivative. Drugs can be incorporated into such a base in aqueous solution if desired. Poly-oxyl 40 stearate and polyethylene glycol 300 are used in an anti-infective ointment to solubilize the active principle in the base so that the ointment can be sterilized by aseptic filtration. The cosmetic-type bases, such as the oil-in-water (o/w) emulsion bases popular in dermatology, should not be used in the eye, nor should liquid emulsions, owing to the ocular irritation produced by the soaps and surfactants used to form the emulsion. [Pg.462]

The extremely large number of lanolin derivatives has been reviewed by Barnett8 and Steel.16 Lanolin derivatives can be formed by acetylation, ethoxylation, propoxylation, alkoxylation, and isobutylation of hydroxy groups, as well as hydroxylation of the double bond in the sterol ester component. Hydrolysis of lanolin can also produce lanolin alcohols and lanolin acids, which like lanolin can be ethoxylated, acetylated, and hydoxylated. [Pg.314]

Lecithins may also exhibit synergistic actions with some compounds. Common additives include special oils, polysorbates, mono- or diglycerides, modified monoglycerides, lanolin and lanolin derivatives, solvents, plasticizers, and other surfactants. [Pg.1751]

Excipient residues may also compromise safety or tolerance. Wool fat or lanolin derived from sheep wool may contain low levels of insecticides from sheep treated for parasites. These insecticide levels are probably too low to cause direct toxicity, but may cause allergic reactions when lanolin in cosmetics or topical medicaments is applied to the skin. [Pg.1615]

Although generally regarded as a nontoxic and nonirritant material, lanolin and lanolin derivatives are associated with skin hypersensitivity reactions and the use of lanolin in subjects with known sensitivity should be avoided. Other reports suggest that sensitivity arises from false positives in patch testing. However, skin hypersensitivity is relatively uncommon the incidence of hypersensitivity to lanolin in the general population is estimated to be around 5 per million. ... [Pg.400]

Many lanolin derivatives are also commercially available that have properties similar to those of the parent material and include acetylated lanolin ethoxylated or polyoxyl lanolin (water-soluble) hydrogenated lanolin isopropyl lanolate lanolin oil lanolin wax liquid lanolin and water-soluble lanolin. [Pg.400]

The main nonionic cosofteners are fatty alcohols, fatty acid esters, ethoxylated fatty amines, or lanolin derivatives. To the cationic-anionic systems belong ether sulfates, alkyl sulfonates, or fatty acids [5,6,10]. In all the blends, the weight ratio of DHTDMAC to the cosoftener is always greater than unity [10]. [Pg.509]
