Reference works

Also induded in this category of publications are the information sheets that are produced regularly by companies, for example  [Pg.7]

Reference works, handbooks and books of tables are indispensable tools for the practising biochemist, both at the desk and in the laboratory. Dictionaries of biochemistry explain technical terms, and handbooks provide information about the structures and important properties of chemical compounds, and also tables of physical, chemical and biochemical data. [Pg.7]

The following concise reference works are suitable for rapid consultation  [Pg.7]

There are chapters on AIDS and antiviral drugs, drug toxicology, blood transfusions, cytokines, plasma volume expanders, the gastrointestinal tract, etc. [Pg.71]

We will recall briefly the different families of hydrocarbons without attempting to give a summary of a course in organic chemistry. The reader is particularly encouraged to refer to general reference works for information concerning the nomenclature and properties of these compounds (Lefebvre, 1978). [Pg.2]

A thorough reference work with emphasis on the detennination of intemiolecular potentials from experimental data. [Pg.217]

The pre-eminent reference works in spectroscopy are the set of books by G Herzberg. [Pg.1149]

This reference work differs from Beilstein in that it is baaed upon structural formulae and compounds are grouped according to the carbon skeleton rather than the functional group the latter system has the advantage that closely related compounds are grouped together. The volumes are not published in numerical order but rather on the basis of fields of current interest. They are a valuable supplement to Beilstein. The volumes which have been published to date (1955) are ... [Pg.1129]

It is regretted that the size of the volume has rendered the insertion of literature references impossible the Selected Bibliography (A,5) may partly compensate for this omission. Section numbers are now included in the headings of the pages—a feature introduced in response to requests by many readers. The volume comprises virtually at least three books under one cover, viz., experimental technique, preparations, and qualitative organic analysis. It should therefore continue to be of value as a one volume reference work in the laboratory. Students at all levels will find their requirements for laboratory work (excluding quantitative organic analysis) adequately provided for and, furthermore, the writer hopes that the book will be used as a source of information to supplement their theoretical studies. [Pg.1192]

In compiling this book, the author has drawn freely from all sources of information available to him—research notes, original memoirs in scientific journals, reference works on organic chemistry, the numerous text books on practical organic chemistry, and pamphlets of manufac turers of specialised apparatus. Whilst individual acknowledgement cannot obviously be made—in many cases the original source has been lost track of—it is a duty and a pleasure to place on record the debt the writer owes to all these sources. Mention must, however, be made of Organic Syntheses, to which the reader is referred for further details of many of the preparations described in the text. [Pg.1193]

There are several exceUent sources of information about the platinum-group metals. The exceUent reference work G. Wilkinson, R. D. GiUard, and J. A. McCleverty, eds.. Comprehensive Coordination Chemistry Pergamon Press, Oxford, U.K., 1987, contains iadividual chapters devoted to descriptive chemistry of each element. [Pg.189]

D. A. Long. Raman Spectroscopy. McGraw-Hill, New York, 1977. A standard reference work on Raman spectroscopy with much theoretical detail on the underlying physics. Most of the needed equations for any application of Raman spectroscopy can be found in this book. [Pg.440]

This section introduces the important subject of heat and mass transfer to serve as a reference work to both the beginning engineer and the practicing industrial ventilation engineer. [Pg.103]

At the end of each chapter, a list of references is given. In addition to the very first publication, and to review articles, references to recent and very recent publications are often given. This is meant to encourage work with, and to give access to the original literature, review articles and reference works for a particular reaction. The reference to the very first publication on a reaction is aimed at the origin of the particular name, and how the reaction was explored or developed. With... [Pg.316]

For a discussion of other modes of conducting hydrogenation, the student is referred to the standard reference works on organic methods (/). [Pg.174]

Nachschiage-buch, -werk, n. reference work, nach-schiagen, v.t. look up, refer to, consult. [Pg.310]

In addition to the patent-derived process information, references are also cited under each drug s entry to major pharmaceuticei reference works where additional information can be obtained on synthesis methods and the pharmecology of the individual products. [Pg.1759]

Enthalpy may be expressed as a total above absolute zero, or any other base which is convenient. Tabulated enthalpies found in reference works are often shown above a base temperature of - 40°C, since this is also - 40° on the old Fahrenheit scale. In any calculation, this base condition should always be checked to avoid the errors which will arise if two different bases are used. [Pg.2]

Thermal conductivities, in watts per metre kelvin, for various common materials are as in Table 1.2. Conductivities for other materials can be found from standard reference works [1, 2, 3]. [Pg.7]

The calculation of every heat transfer coefficient for a refrigeration or air-conditioning system would be a very time-consuming process, even with modern methods of calculation. Formulas based on these factors will be found in standard reference works, expressed in terms of heat transfer coefficients under different conditions of fluid flow [1, 4-8]. [Pg.7]

Other terms not given here may be encountered from time to time and will be found in standard reference works [1, 2, 4, 10]. [Pg.368]

The CRC-Elsevier materials selector , 2nd edition, N.A. Waterman, and M.E Ashby CRC Press (1996) ISBN 0412615509. (Now, also available on CD-ROM). Basic reference work. Three-volume compilation of data for all materials includes selection and design guide. The Materials Selector is the most comprehensive and up-to-date comparative information system on engineering materials and related methods of component manufacture. It contains information on the properties, performance and processability of metals, plastics, ceramics, composites, surface treatments and the characteristics and comparative economics of the manufacturing routes which convert these materials into engineering components and products. [Pg.601]

Processes), (ASM), Special Issue Penton Publishing (1994). Basic reference work-up dated annually. Tables of data for a broad range of metals, ceramics, polymers and composites. [Pg.602]

Again, therefore, all thermodynamic properties of a system in quantum statistics can be derived from a knowledge of the partition function, and since this is the trace of an operator, we can choose any convenient representation in which to compute it. The most fruitful application of this method is probably to the theory of imperfect gases, and is well covered in the standard reference works.23... [Pg.472]

Many textbooks and reference works dealing with various aspects of electroanalytical chemistry have been published in recent decades. Some of these are given below as suggestions for additional reading, in alphabetic order ... [Pg.25]

In addition to Beilstein, there are many other reference works in organic chemistry that are essentially compilations of data. These books are very useful and often save the research worker a great deal of time. In this section, we discuss some of the more important of such works. [Pg.1616]

Particular attention has been devoted to the compilation of the cumulative index. Every reference work is only as good as its indexing system. For this reason a presentation has been chosen which allows one to recognize immediately in which volume the key word appears. The same also applies to named reagents which can be traced back to the original publication in almost all cases in order to be able to correct any errors that have crept in. This type of presentation will be continued in future volumes. [Pg.4]
