Derivation process

Processes for hydrogen gasification, hydrogen pyrolysis, or coking of coal usually produce Hquid co-products. The Hygas process produces about 6% Hquids as benzene, toluene, and xylene. Substitution of petroleum residuum for the coal-derived process oil has been used in studies of coal Hquefaction and offers promise as a lower cost technology (104).

The simplified failure envelopes are not derived from physical theories of failure in which the actual physical processes that cause failure on a microscopic level are integrated to obtain a failure theory. We, instead, deal with phenomenological theories in which we ignore the actual failure mechanisms and concentrate on the gross macroscopic events of failure. Phenomenological theories are based on curve-fitting, so they are failure criteria and not theories of any kind (the term theory implies a formal derivation process).

Downstream of the compressor is a series of fractionators (generally the tallest towers in an ethylene plant) which separate the methane and hydrogen, the ethylene, the ethane, and the propane and heavier. All are heavy metallurgy to handle the pressures and insulated to maintain the low temperatures. There s also an acetylene hydrogenator or converter in there. Trace (very small) amounts of acetylene in ethylene can really clobber some of the ethylene derivative processes, particularly polyethylene manufacture. So the stream is treated with hydrogen over a catalyst to convert the little acetylene present into ethylene. 

As one of the newest petrochemicals to make the big time, alpha olefins have found two niches. One is in the petrochemicals industry as precursors for detergents, copolymers, and specialty chemicals. The other niche is in this book, appropriately sandwiched in between the usual list of petrochemical derivatives and the polymers. The alpha olefins are indeed derivatives, but the process for creating them is more like polymerization than any other derivative process. 

The dose descriptor may also implicate uncertainties which require the application of an assessment factor. For example, the use of a LOAEL as the dose descriptor generally entails more uncertainties to the derivation process than the use of a NOAEL and thus entails a greater assessment factor. Even when a NOAEL is used as dose descriptor the application of an assessment factor may be necessary. For example, if teratogenic effects were observed at dose levels only slightly higher than the NOAEL, an assessment factor is applied in order to account for the steep dose-response curve.
