Equation V-64 is that of a parabola, and electrocapillary curves are indeed approximately parabolic in shape. Because E ax tmd 7 max very nearly the same for certain electrolytes, such as sodium sulfate and sodium carbonate, it is generally assumed that specific adsorption effects are absent, and Emax is taken as a constant (-0.480 V) characteristic of the mercury-water interface. For most other electrolytes there is a shift in the maximum voltage, and is then taken to be Emax 0.480. Some values for the quantities are given in Table V-5 [113]. Much information of this type is due to Gouy [125], although additional results are to be found in most of the other references cited in this section. [Pg.199]

This new edition, the hfth under the aegis of the present editor, remains the one-volume source of factual information for chemists, both professionals and students—the hrst place in which to look it up on the spot. The aim is to provide sufficient data to satisfy all one s general needs without recourse to other reference sources. A user will hnd this volume of value as a time-saver because of the many tables of numerical data which have been especially compiled. [Pg.1283]

Oxidation. Hydrogen peroxide is a strong oxidant. Most of its uses and those of its derivatives depend on this property. Hydrogen peroxide oxidizes a wide variety of organic and inorganic compounds, ranging from iodide ions to the various color bodies of unknown stmcture in ceUulosic fibers. The rate of these reactions may be quite slow or so fast that the reaction occurs on a reactive shock wave. The mechanisms of these reactions are varied and dependent on the reductive substrate, the reaction environment, and catalysis. Specific reactions are discussed in a number of general and other references (4,5,32—35). [Pg.472]

Ethylene Oxide Recovery. An economic recovery scheme for a gas stream that contains less than 3 mol % ethylene oxide (EO) must be designed. It is necessary to achieve nearly complete removal siace any ethylene oxide recycled to the reactor would be combusted or poison the carbon dioxide removal solution. Commercial designs use a water absorber foUowed by vacuum or low pressure stripping of EO to minimize oxide hydrolysis. Several patents have proposed improvements to the basic recovery scheme (176—189). Other references describe how to improve the scmbbiag efficiency of water or propose alternative solvents (180,181). [Pg.459]

The definition of the heat-transfer coefficient is arbitrary, depending on whether bulk-fluid temperature, centerline temperature, or some other reference temperature is used for ti or t-. Equation (5-24) is an expression of Newtons law of cooling and incorporates all the complexities involved in the solution of Eq. (5-23). The temperature gradients in both the fluid and the adjacent solid at the fluid-solid interface may also be related to the heat-transfer coefficient ... [Pg.558]

Potential control with zinc reference electrodes presented a problem because deposits of corrosion products are formed on zinc in hot water. This caused changes in the potential of the electrode which could not be tolerated. Other reference electrodes (e.g., calomel and Ag-AgCl reference electrodes) were not yet available for this application. Since then, Ag-AgCl electrodes have been developed which successfully operate at temperatures up to 100°C. The solution in the previous case was the imposition of a fixed current level after reaching stationary operating conditions [27]. [Pg.459]

If reviewers of completed forms are not the preparer, they need to be trained in procedures to audit the quality of the collected information and documentation files. This training may include means to check the completeness and credibility of the collected data by cross checking the data against other reference files, such as maintenance files or operating logs. [Pg.216]
