The Editors and Publisher believe that Comprehensive Organic Synthesis will serve all those who must face the problem of preparing organic compounds. We intend it to be an essential reference work for the experienced practitioner who seeks information to solve a particular problem. At the same time, we must also serve the chemist whose major interest lies outside organic synthesis and therefore is only an occasional practitioner. In addition, the series has an educational role. We hope to instruct experienced investigators who want to learn the essential facts and concepts of an area new to them. We also hope to teach the novice student by providing an authoritative account of an area and by conveying the excitement of the field. [Pg.1314]

The book meets the requirements for today s teaching of stereoselective reactions, and it is of a quality and competence which will make it a handy reference work even for those experts doing research in the various areas covered. [Pg.375]

The emphasis in this book, then, is to teach the elements of heterocyclic chemistry it is not to serve as a broad reference work, and it is not competitive with the numerous more advanced books in this field. It should be noted, however, that chemists at all levels might find it useful to assist them when first entering the field, as for example those headed to research in medicinal chemistry where heterocycles abound. [Pg.343]

Instead of a theory to elucidate the important unsolved problems of chemistry, theoretical chemistry has become synonymous with what is also known as Quantum Chemistry. This discipline has patently failed to have any impact on the progress of mainstream chemistry. A new edition of the world s leading Physical Chemistry textbook [4] was published in the year that the Nobel prize was awarded to two quantum chemists, without mentioning either the subject of their work, nor the names of the laureates. Nevertheless, the teaching of chemistry, especially at the introductory level, continues in terms of handwaiving by reference to the same quantum chemistry, that never penetrates the surface of advanced quantum theory. [Pg.558]

Readers will notice that, throughout this book, those undertaking the Work are referred to as practitioners. This is done to emphasize that this manual is written for those who have some experience of this study, or more accurately, those who have acquired skill in esoteric discipline. It is not designed for students, newcomers to the mystical teachings. [Pg.12]

The purpose of the work has been to provide basic information on methods of chemical analysis and new instrumental techniques that have been developed and improved in recent years. Its objective is to provide the analyst with a reference manual while providing students with a teaching tool that covers the basics of most instrumental techniques presently used in chemical analysis. It incorporates basic principles, describes commonly used instruments and discusses the main application for most of the analytical techniques. [Pg.462]

Our main objective was to prepare a useful reference source for all those involved in the research, teaching, study, and practice of electrochemical (bio)sensor analysis for environmental, clinical and industrial analysis. It covers the entire field of electrochemical (bio)sensor designs and characterisations and encompasses all subjects relevant to their application in real clinical, environment, food and industry related samples as well as for safety and security. The contributors work in a wide diversity of technological and scientific fields. [Pg.1336]
