Depression is a common symptom when a client is diagnosed as HIV positive or with AIDs. In a recent study investigators studied the efficacy of two SSRI medications, fluoxetine (Prozac) and sertraline (Zoloft), in treating depressed women who were HIV positive (Ferrando, Rabkin, de Moore, Rabkin, 1999). Thirty women were enrolled in an eight-week open trial. The mean age of the women was 35 and most of their HIV risk was related to intravenous drug use (53%) or heterosexual contact (40%). Eighteen women actually completed the study, and the most fie-quently reported adverse effect was anxiety, overstimulation, and insomnia. [Pg.95]

Studies such as this one help to establish that HIV-seropositive women who are depressed can benefit from taking medications. Attention should not be diverted, however, from the need for aggressive outreach, education, and attention to the essential issues these women will have to face as a consequence of the illness. A diagnosis of HIV or AIDS can be overwhelming, and there are many aspects of the client s life that will need to be addressed. The importance of individual assessment, counseling, and education cannot be overestimated. In addition, clients should be made aware that the two major side effects of anxiety and insomnia may further jeopardize a woman s emotional and physical health. Through counseling [Pg.95]

TSC-LAM can be discovered by screening TSC patients with HRCT, while S-LAM almost always comes to attention in patients undergoing clinical evaluation for a medical problem. It is not surprising, therefore, that LAM manifestations in published TSC-LAM series (5,116) are generally milder than in studies with S-LAM. Alternatively, TSC-LAM may be an inherently milder condition. Patients with TSC-LAM have a lower frequency of abdominal [Pg.757]

The remarkable gender restriction in LAM, though unexplained, has provided the rationale for the empiric antiestrogen strategies that have dominated the approach [Pg.758]

Vacuum systems, largely for the semiconductor industry, are the main source of sales (see Semiconductors). The problems involved in orienting polymers for improved properties were first surveyed in a special issue of Journal of Materials Science (Ward 1971b). Another early survey of this important modern technology was a book edited by Ciferri and Ward (1979), while a recent authoritative account of the modern technology is by Bastiaansen (1997). [Pg.321]

Earlier, a special issue of Materials Science and Engineering (Jones and Kurz 1984) to mark the 30th anniversary of the identification of constitutional supercooling includes 21 concise survey papers which constitute an excellent source for assessing the state of knowledge on solidification at that stage. Another source is a textbook (Kurz and Fisher 1984) published the same year. [Pg.347]
