An annual review of germanium is pubUshed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (40) and a broader survey is pubUshed every five years (41). The Engineering and Mining Journal also pubhshed an annual germanium review through 1986 (42). The economics of germanium, with special emphasis on world trade, have been reviewed (43).

The market for talc in the United States based on the 1995 U.S. Geological Survey Annual Review (3) is summarized in Table 2. Ceramics was the biggest market, having almost 35% of the total, followed by paint, paper, and plastics. Outside of the United States, especially in Asia, paper is the principal apphcation. In that region talc is available locally at lower cost than competitive minerals such as kaolin. 

Thermal effects on aquatic organisms have been given critical scientific review. Annual reviews of the thermal effects Hterature have been pubUshed beginning in 1968 (12). Water temperature criteria for protection of aquatic life were prepared by the NAS in 1972, and these criteria have formed the basis of the EPA recommendations for estabUshing water temperature standards for specific water bodies (13,14).

Regularly (at least annually) review all chemical feed and handling equipment. 

This chapter lists some representative examples of biochemicals and their origins, a brief indication of key techniques used in their purification, and literature references where further details may be found. Simpler low molecular weight compounds, particularly those that may have been prepared by chemical syntheses, e.g. acetic acid, glycine, will be found in Chapter 4. Only a small number of enzymes and proteins are included because of space limitations. The purification of some of the ones that have been included has been described only briefly. The reader is referred to comprehensive texts such as the Methods Enzymol (Academic Press) series which currently runs to more than 344 volumes and The Enzymes (3rd Edn, Academic Press) which runs to 22 volumes for methods of preparation and purification of proteins and enzymes. Leading referenees on proteins will be found in Advances in Protein Chemistry (59 volumes. Academic Press) and on enzymes will be found in Advances in Enzymology (72 volumes, then became Advances in Enzymology and Related Area of Molecular Biology, J Wiley Sons). The Annual Review of Biochemistry (Annual Review Inc. Patio Alto California) also is an excellent source of key references to the up-to-date information on known and new natural compounds, from small molecules, e.g. enzyme cofactors to proteins and nucleic acids. 

A valuable source of up-to-date reviews of many aspects of MSE is a series of books. Annual Reviews of Materials Science, published for the last 30 years. There has been one extensive series of high-level multiauthor treatments right across the entire spectrum of MSE, in the form of 25 books collectively entitled Materials Science and Technology A Comprehensive Treatment (1991-2000), masterminded by Peter Haasen, Edward Kramer and myself. There have also been three encyclopedias, the Encyclopedia of Materials Science and Engineering (1986), the Encyclopedia of Advanced Materials (1994) and the Encyclopedia of Materials (2001), which last has appeared in both printed and on-line versions and will receive annual updates. 

Tlie DOE Office of Environmental Safety and Health distributes monthly summaries ba.scd on data retreived from the DOE Occurrence Reporting and Processing System (ORPS) to share chemical safety concerns throughout the industry to alert operators of similar processes.
