Equipment should be suitable for the manufacturing process, should be so arranged that accidents can be easily traced, should allow workers to escape quickly and should be combined with proper protection to save people, other equipment, other buildings etc. [Pg.300]

Iron must not be allowed to come into contact with loose compositions, because it easily sparks other hard and brittle metals often spark. [Pg.300]

Worktables should be made of wood and framed at the edge. [Pg.301]

The drying room or drier for the fireworks must not be multi-purpose, but planned exclusively for firework use. Drying in the sun is unavoidable, but if it is placed near workrooms this tends to conduct fire from one room to another in an accident, i.e., this violates the principle of separation. Careful consideration should be given to the position for drying in the sun. [Pg.301]

Access to cell rooms is usually restricted to authori2ed personnel. Required personal safety equipment includes mbber shoes or overshoes, goggles, hard hat, and some sort of emergency respirator. Safety training courses are generally required before one is allowed to enter a cell house without a guide. [Pg.82]

The provision and use of properly selected personal protective equipment is normally regarded as back-up for the previous measures. Refer to Chapter 13. In some situations it is the only reasonably practicable measure to ensure personal safety and its use may be a legal requirement. Examples are ... [Pg.108]

Inspection of emergency equipment such as fire trucks, police cars, medical vehicles, personal safety equipment, and alaniis should be done routinely. [Pg.94]

The trainee will visit other departments in the head office to learn about the supporting facilities which are available such as non-destructive testing, metallurgical and failure analysis, hazard analysis and quality assurance. Emphasis is laid on safety, i.e. the integrity and safety of the plant in operation and on the surveyor s own personal safety. It is important that the trainee understands the techniques involved, particularly the limitations of their application. [Pg.145]

When dealing with anyrefrigerant, personal safety and the safetyof others are vitally important. Service and maintenance staff need to be familiar with safetyprocedures and what to do in the event of an emergency. Health and safety requirements are available from manufacturers of all refrigerants and should be obtained and studied. [Pg.35]

The chemistry laboratory is a place to experiment and learn. You must assume responsibility for your own personal safety and that of people working near you. Accidents are usually caused by carelessness, but you can help prevent them by closely following the instructions printed in this manual and those given to you by your teacher. The following are some safety rules to help guide you in protecting yourself and others from injury in a laboratory. [Pg.222]

Caution Handle all radioactive substances according to the radiation safety regulations instituted at each facility approved to handle such materials. Use adequate precautions to protect personal safety and the environment. Dispose of radioactive waste only by following approved guidelines. [Pg.550]

Industrial recognition of customer and employee safety is a major factor and is included in international programs such as ISO 9000 and ISO 14000. Further, a number of national and state agencies and associations deal with aspects of the environmental and personal safety issues on an ongoing basis. [Pg.700]

From a health perspective, there are few redeeming features of solvents except when used as anesthetics. Clearly the simple recommendation is to avoid exposure unless administered for some medical reason. In the workplace, appropriate ventilation and personal safety equipment should be in place at all times. There are numerous national and international regulations on solvent exposure in the workplace. Substitution of less-toxic solvents in processes and products can reduce the risk of injury. [Pg.140]

Treatment should begin in the least restrictive setting that ensures personal safety, as it is important to maximize family involvement from the onset. In youth with SUD, family involvement increases compliance with treatment and leads to higher rates of sustained abstinence (Bergmann et ah, 1995). It is important to review with the patient and family that medication is one aspect of the treatment plan and is more likely to be effective when used in conjunction with other treatments. In addition, the clinician should also review how the medication will work, the possible side effects, and the time frame in which benefit may be expected. An informed and involved family is more likely to encourage compliance from an adolescent than one that has never met their child s treatment team. An adult caretaker and not the patient should store, administer, and monitor all prescription medications to maximize compliance and minimize the potential for abuse. [Pg.611]

In the construction of the wet oxidation unit, several areas of safety were considered. Of utmost importance was that of personal safety. Since this type of operation demands the use of high pressures and temperatures, operator contact with the high pressure vessels had to be limited. To accommodate this criterion, a barrier was constructed to shield the operator from any unforeseen releases from the reactor. This barrier was constructed from 1/4 inch steel and is desig ied in a manner that will fully contain any releases. This barrier is also equipped with two explosion vents to direct the force of any explosions away from the main walls and into a safe area. To further maximize personnel safety, all operator assisted controls are mounted on the outside of the unit. [Pg.445]
