Safety culture personal protection equipment

Safety culture is best described using an example of a worker wearing his or her protective safety eyewear without being told to do so. This behavior is an example of the worker s attitude regarding the wearing of personal protective equipment. This is an outward act that demonstrates the value held by the organization related to the true value the company places on safety and health. [Pg.100]

Another main group is comprised of the information related to safety attitudes and safety culture. The work experience of victims was mainly considered sufficient. Instead, there were serious deficiencies in the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Respirators were not in use there were not available at all or they were improper for the working conditions in which workers used them. Other workers noticed the possible accident quite soon in two cases and after a while in one accident (when they returned from the break room). One driver was working alone. [Pg.119]

In a strong safety culture, everyone feels responsible for safety and pursues it on a daily basis employees go beyond the call of duty to identify unsafe conditions and behaviors, and intervene to correct them. For example, in a strong safety culture any employee would feel comfortable walking up to any top manager and reminding him or her to wear personal protective equipment. This type of behavior would not be viewed as forward or overzealous, but would be valued by the organization and rewarded. Likewise, co-workers routinely look out for one another and point out unsafe behaviors to each other [7]. [Pg.89]

Employees should be encouraged to help in the enforcement of work rules and work practices. Your intent is not to turn your employees into informers, but to encourage them to keep an eye out for the safety of themselves and fellow workers. Many employers have encouraged an atmosphere where a successful safety culture exists by getting employees involved. In this type of situation, employees speak up when they see safety issues— for example, a co-worker who needs to be reminded to put on personal protective equipment [2]. In many cases, employees will discuss safety infractions with their co-workers. The key is to develop a culture where personal protective equipment is not the only safety infraction that is discussed. There are many more hazards that should be identified. [Pg.217]

The current safety culture of the example organization was assessed using Glendon et al. s (1994) questionnaire. A summary of the study and results is presented below. The personal protective equipment factor was dropped from this study as it was not relevant to the control room staff. [Pg.387]
