Personal safety monitoring

Treatment should begin in the least restrictive setting that ensures personal safety, as it is important to maximize family involvement from the onset. In youth with SUD, family involvement increases compliance with treatment and leads to higher rates of sustained abstinence (Bergmann et ah, 1995). It is important to review with the patient and family that medication is one aspect of the treatment plan and is more likely to be effective when used in conjunction with other treatments. In addition, the clinician should also review how the medication will work, the possible side effects, and the time frame in which benefit may be expected. An informed and involved family is more likely to encourage compliance from an adolescent than one that has never met their child s treatment team. An adult caretaker and not the patient should store, administer, and monitor all prescription medications to maximize compliance and minimize the potential for abuse. 

Planning for continuous maintenance and monitoring of facilities basic to health regarding proper waste removal, adequate water and food supplies, shelter, and personal safety. 

The use and operation of guardrail systems, personal fall arrest systems, safety net systems, warning line systems, safety monitoring systems, controlled access zones, and other protection to be used ... 

Safety-monitoring system means a safety system in which a competent person is responsible for recognizing and warning employees of fall hazards. 

The employer shall designate a competent person to monitor the safety of other employees and the employer shall ensure that the safety monitor complies with the following requirements ... 

Under 29 CFR 1926.501 (b)(10), do you have to prove that guardrails, safety nets, and personal fall arrest systems are infeasible before using a safety monitor on a roof 50 feet or less in width If so, does infeasible mean impossible or unreasonable due to financial or time restraints ... 

Prior to the issuance of this new directive, STD 03-00-001 allowed employers engaged in certain residential construction activities to use specified alternative methods of fall protection (e.g., slide guards or safety monitor systems) rather than the conventional fall protection (guardrails, safety nets, or personal fall arrest systems) required by the residential construction fall protection standard (29 CFR 1926.501 (b)(13)). Employers could use the alternative measures described in STD 03-00-001 without first proving that the use of conventional fall protection was infeasible or created a greater hazard and without a written fall protection plan. 

While personal exposure monitoring Is the most reliable approach for assessing the level of respiratory protection required, it may not always be necessary to take personal exposure measurements to determine whether (or what level of) respiratory protection is needed. Appropriate safety factors should be used when using estimates of employee exposures. 

Considerable emphasis must be placed on the systems for measuring performance against previously agreed standards. A number of formal systems of health and safety monitoring - safety audits, inspections, health and safety reviews - must be operated, with the appointed competent persons using such systems to assess performance on a continuing basis.
