A life-jacket is a personal safety device which, when fully inflated (if inflatable), will provide sufficient buoyancy to turn and support even an unconscious person s, face upwards within five seconds (ten seconds if automatically inflated). The person s head will be supported with the mouth and nose well clear of the water. 

The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 established mandatory workplace characteristics backed by inspections and fines for non-compliance with OSHA s regulations. Under OSHA workers also cannot be expected to use information on job related health hazards to take injury avoidance measures on their own or to use personal safety devices if provided by the firm. Standards in turn require plantwide capital investments. The logic of mandatory health and safety standards for employers is that a government agency specializing in workplace safety will know more than employers and workers concerning how to make work sites safer. 

Personal safety measures must be taken in a time shorter than the time required for the exposure to cause harmful symptoms in the individual. Harmful levels of toxic chemicals can be ingested by a person either through acute or chronic exposures. This suggests that a personal safety device used by an inspector should have two levels of concentration - time sensitivity, one acute and one chronic. 

The next priority in the sequence is to provide safety devices, or features that prevent people from being exposed to a hazard. Safety devices are automatic and require no action on the part of a person. Safety devices do not ehminate hazards. Examples of safety devices are interlocks, dead-man switches, guards, fences, automatic fire doors, some types of fire sprinklers, and automatic air brakes that activate when there is a break in an air line. A significant problem with many safety devices is that people intentionally disable them and fail to reinstall or activate them after service or maintenance. 

Have a suitable written scheme drawn up or certified by a competent person for the examination at appropriate intervals of most pressure vessels and all safety devices, and any pipework which is potentially dangerous. Advice may be sought from any competent person when deciding what vessels and parts of the pipework need to be included. 

Repairs, renewals or alterations to the power press and safety device(s) to remedy defects which are or may become a cause of danger to employed persons (Regulation 6(1)) (see note 2)... 

With plastics that decompose, there may be hazards such as personal bums or wounds and air contamination. Faulty controllers and/or freeze-off can cause the overheating situation from a burned out heater. Safety devices should be used that alert the plant when problems develop people have to be aware of these possible situations. Recognize that personnel injury in plants due to machinery represents 10% of all accidents (Fig. 8-77).

Concludes that 44 percent of the deaths studied could have been prevented if the gun in question had at least one of the following safety devices personalization, loaded-chamber indicator, or magazine safety.
