Desalinization

Reverse osmosis is used for desalination of seawater, treatment of recycle water in chemical plants and separation of industrial wastes. More recently the technique has been applied to concentration and dehydrogenation of food products such as milk and fruit juices. See ultrafiltralion. [Pg.344]

It is extensively used for making stainless steel and other corrosion-resistant alloys such as Invar(R), Monel(R), Inconel(R), and the Hastelloys(R). Tubing made of copper-nickel alloy is extensively used in making desalination plants for converting sea water into fresh water. [Pg.67]

Titanium has potential use in desalination plants for converting sea water into fresh water. The metal has excellent resistance to sea water and is used for propeller shafts, rigging, and other parts of ships exposed to salt water. A titanium anode coated with platinum has been used to provide cathodic protection from corrosion by salt water. [Pg.76]

Fuhy aromatic, thermally (up to 250°C) and hydrolyticahy resistant films of PODs have been reali2ed from polyhydra2ides (56). Films of these polymers are useful as seawater desalination membranes. [Pg.534]

Although these composite fibers were developed for reverse osmosis their acceptance in the desalination industry has been limited due to insufficient selectivity and oxidative stabiUty. The concept, however, is extremely viable composite membrane fiat films made from interfacial polymerisation (20) have gained wide industry approval. HoUow fibers using this technique to give equivalent properties and life, yet to be developed, should be market tested during the 1990s. [Pg.151]

The copper-chelating abihty of sahcylaldoxime has been used to remove copper from brine in a seawater desalination plant effluent. A carbon—sorbate bed produced by sorption of the oxime on carbon proved to be extremely effective in the continuous process (99). In another apphcation, the chelating abihty of sahcylaldoxime with iron and copper was used to stabilize bleaching powders containing inorganic peroxide salts (100). [Pg.508]

Reverse Osmosis. This was the first membrane-based separation process to be commercialized on a significant scale. The breakthrough discovery that made reverse osmosis (qv) possible was the development of the Loeb-Sourirajan asymmetric cellulose acetate membrane. This membrane made desalination by reverse osmosis practical within a few years commercial plants were installed. The total worldwide market for reverse osmosis membrane modules is about 200 million /yr, spHt approximately between 25% hoUow-ftber and 75% spiral-wound modules. The general trend of the industry is toward spiral-wound modules for this appHcation, and the market share of the hoUow-ftber products is gradually falling (72). [Pg.80]

The first reverse osmosis modules made from cellulose diacetate had a salt rejection of approximately 97—98%. This was enough to produce potable water (ie, water containing less than 500 ppm salt) from brackish water sources, but was not enough to desalinate seawater efficiently. In the 1970s, interfacial composite membranes with salt rejections greater than 99.5% were developed, making seawater desalination possible (29,30) a number of large plants are in operation worldwide. [Pg.80]

Although the principal appHcation of reverse osmosis membranes is still desalination of brackish water or seawater to provide drinking water, a significant market is production of ultrapure water. Such water is used in steam boilers or in the electronics industry, where huge amounts of extremely pure water with a total salt concentration significantly below 1 ppm are required to wash siUcon wafers. [Pg.81]

Electro dialysis is used widely to desalinate brackish water, but this is by no means its only significant appHcation. In Japan, which has no readily available natural salt brines, electro dialysis is used to concentrate salt from seawater. The process is also used in the food industry to deionize cheese whey, and in a number of poUution-control appHcations. [Pg.82]
