The process of cancerization in the stomach mucosa, therefore, seems to be a continuum of changes which turns a normal cell into a metaplastic cell and then to a progressively dysplastic cell and finally a cancerous cell. The changes usually take several decades, are gradual, and the change from one cell type to the other does not seem obligatory. They seem to reflect sequential mutations or cell transformations.
