Cancer Cells Fibroblast transformation

Connexin 43 is one of the cell membrane gap junction proteins that allow for cell to cell communication. Cancer cell transformation is correlated with the loss of Connexin 43 expression (Hussain et al. 1989, Zhang et al. 1992). Lycopene increased Connexin 43 expression in fetal skin fibroblasts (Stahl et al. 2000), oral cancer KB-1 cells grown in organotypic rafts (Livny et al. 2003) and breast cancer cell lines (Chalabi et al. 2007). [Pg.453]

Glucose deprivation has been shown to cause activation of Lyn kinase, c-Jun W-terminal kinase 1 and to increase the expression of basic fibroblast growth factor and c-Myc in adri-amycin-resistant human breast cancer cells. Thus, glucose oxidation may be linked to cellular oxidative stress as evidenced from increase in the steady state of oxidized glutathione and intracellular peroxides [85]. A unique glucose-dependent apoptotic pathway is induced by the cellular oncogen c-Myc in transformed fibroblasts [86]. [Pg.2421]

When ODAR attaches to the osteoblast surface-bound ODF, the receptor/ligand complex activates a membrane-associated tyrosine-protein kinase to induce synthesis of the ruffled membrane. A tyrosine residue on C1IC-5 (Sect. 10.1.4) is phosphorylated by an activated protein kinase, called c-src, the normal cytosolic homologue of a viral tyrosine kinase which causes a sarcoma (transforms fibroblasts into cancer cells). The phosphorylated C1IC-5 interacts with phospholipids, a chloride channel protein (C1C-7) and two transporter proteins, the ATPase proton transporter, and the proton-dependent phosphate transporter. Mutations that suppress c-src or prevent expression or functioning of C1C-7 or C1IC-5 in mice or humans prevent osteoclast development and cause overly dense, brittle bones (osteopetrosis). [Pg.160]

Because it is not a significant dietaiy carotenoid, epidemiological data on canthaxanthin in disease prevention are lacking. However, it has exhibited potential anticancer properties in vitro and in animal models. Canthaxanthin can suppress proliferation of human colon cancer cells, " protect mouse embryo fibroblasts from transformation, and... [Pg.669]

The biological activity of the platinum polyamines was tested in cell culture using two cell lines derived from mouse fibroblasts. Balb/3T3 cells resemble normal cells in their growth properties m-MSV Balb/3T3 cells have been transformed and resemble cancer cells in their growth properties. [Pg.341]

The RNA/DNA-transformed cells regained the extraordinary vitality of ancient primordial unicellular organisms and readily mobilize all possible cell survival pathways . On occasions, the cancer cell fuses with a mesenchymal cell (the tumor-supportive subverted fibroblast or macrophage). These cell fusions were recently discussed in a Springer publication of authors/editors Dittmar Zanker [1541]. This author proposed that endogenous retroviruses that frequendy appear budding from maUgnandy transformed lymphoma, melanoma and adenocarcinoma cells, mediate these cell fusions [26, 27]. [Pg.341]
