One method of sampling reservoir fluids and taking formation pressures under reservoir conditions in open hole is by using a wireline formation tester. A number of wireline logging companies provide such a tool under the names such as RFT (repeat formation tester) and FMT (formation multi tester), so called because they can take a series of pressure samples in the same logging run. A newer version of the tool is called a modular dynamic tester or MDT (Schlumberger tool), shown in Figure 3.8. [Pg.132]

Note The segmentation operation yields a near-optimal estimate x that may be used as initialization point for an optimization algoritlim that has to find out the global minimum of the criterion /(.). Because of its nonlinear nature, we prefer to minimize it by using a stochastic optimization algorithm (a version of the Simulated Annealing algorithm [3]). [Pg.175]

The main danger when using so much software is to never know if the version used is up to date. This problem was solved by identifying each software and hardware component of the instrument. [Pg.282]

That means, the input signal u( ) is applied on =0. The output signal y(x) is than given by fthat means by a shifted and scaled version of g(x ). So, the output signal y(x ) at a special location corresponds to the addition of the terms u( )g(x - ) over alt [2,3]. [Pg.367]

Mephisto is devoted to predict the ultrasonic scans (A,B or C-scans) for a priori knowledge of the piece and the defects within. In the present version Mephisto only deals with homogeneous isotropic materials. The piece under test can be planar, cylindrical or have a more complex geometry. The defects can be either planar (one or several facets), or volumetric (spherical voids, side drilled holes, flat or round bottom holes). [Pg.737]

The modern Russian MIA flaw detectors use pulse version of the method [1-3], which peirnits to produce very portable (0.7 - 1.5 kg) and simple instruments, convenient especially for in-service testing. The objects to be tested are multilayer structures of reinforced plastics, metals and other materials honeycomb panels, antenna fairings, propellers, helicopter rotors and so on. In mentioned instruments amplitude-frequency analog signal processing is used. [Pg.827]

A sketch of Langmuir s film balance is shown in Ref. 7 and a modem version of a film balance, in Fig. IV-5. [Pg.102]

A major advance in force measurement was the development by Tabor, Win-terton and Israelachvili of a surface force apparatus (SFA) involving crossed cylinders coated with molecularly smooth cleaved mica sheets [11, 28]. A current version of an apparatus is shown in Fig. VI-4 from Ref. 29. The separation between surfaces is measured interferometrically to a precision of 0.1 nm the surfaces are driven together with piezoelectric transducers. The combination of a stiff double-cantilever spring with one of a number of measuring leaf springs provides force resolution down to 10 dyn (10 N). Since its development, several groups have used the SFA to measure the retarded and unretarded dispersion forces, electrostatic repulsions in a variety of electrolytes, structural and solvation forces (see below), and numerous studies of polymeric and biological systems. [Pg.236]

Various functional forms for / have been proposed either as a result of empirical observation or in terms of specific models. A particularly important example of the latter is that known as the Langmuir adsorption equation [2]. By analogy with the derivation for gas adsorption (see Section XVII-3), the Langmuir model assumes the surface to consist of adsorption sites, each having an area a. All adsorbed species interact only with a site and not with each other, and adsorption is thus limited to a monolayer. Related lattice models reduce to the Langmuir model under these assumptions [3,4]. In the case of adsorption from solution, however, it seems more plausible to consider an alternative phrasing of the model. Adsorption is still limited to a monolayer, but this layer is now regarded as an ideal two-dimensional solution of equal-size solute and solvent molecules of area a. Thus lateral interactions, absent in the site picture, cancel out in the ideal solution however, in the first version is a properly of the solid lattice, while in the second it is a properly of the adsorbed species. Both models attribute differences in adsorption behavior entirely to differences in adsorbate-solid interactions. Both present adsorption as a competition between solute and solvent. [Pg.391]

It is perhaps fortunate that both versions lead to the same algebraic formulations, but we will imply a preference for the two-dimensional solution picture by expressing surface concentrations in terms of mole fractions. The adsorption process can be written as... [Pg.391]
