Lead and Lead-Lined Steel Pipe Lead and lead-hned steel lipe have been essentially eliminated as piping materials owing to lealth hazards in fabrication and installation and to environmental objections. Reinforced plastics (RPs) hold a special place in the design and manufacturing industry because they are unique materials (Figs. 6-11 and 6-12). During the 1940s, RPs (or low-pressure laminates, as they were then commonly known) was easy to identify. Both shape and design details are heavily process related. The ability to mold ribs, for example, may depend on material flow during a process or on the flowability of a plastic reinforced with glass. The ability to produce hollow shapes depends on the ability to use removable cores, including air, fusible or soluble solids, and even sand.
