Defectoscope AUGUR)) is a complex device including Notebook PC with additional electronic boards, small-size automatic two-coordinate scanner, set of piezoelectric transducers, up to 25 m communication line (Fig. 1). [Pg.194]

A major advance in force measurement was the development by Tabor, Win-terton and Israelachvili of a surface force apparatus (SFA) involving crossed cylinders coated with molecularly smooth cleaved mica sheets [11, 28]. A current version of an apparatus is shown in Fig. VI-4 from Ref. 29. The separation between surfaces is measured interferometrically to a precision of 0.1 nm the surfaces are driven together with piezoelectric transducers. The combination of a stiff double-cantilever spring with one of a number of measuring leaf springs provides force resolution down to 10 dyn (10 N). Since its development, several groups have used the SFA to measure the retarded and unretarded dispersion forces, electrostatic repulsions in a variety of electrolytes, structural and solvation forces (see below), and numerous studies of polymeric and biological systems. [Pg.236]

For ultrasonic nebulizers, the liquid is fragmented into droplets by an acoustic standing wave, usually produced by a piezoelectric transducer. [Pg.400]

Nickel is being used ia magnetostrictive transducers ia some ultrasonic devices, eg, solderiag irons and ultrasonic cleaners, because of its moderate magnetostriction and availabiUty. This market, however, is dominated by piezoelectric transducers of lead zirconate—titanate (PZT) (see Ultrasonics). [Pg.374]

Piezoelectric Transducers Certain ciystals produce a potential difference between their surfaces when stressed in appropriate directions. Piezoelectric pressure transducers generate a potential difference proportional to a pressure-generated stress. Because of the extremely high electrical impedance of piezoelectric crystals at low frequency, these transducers are usually not suitable for measurement of static process pressures. [Pg.762]

In its most common mode of operation, STM employs a piezoelectric transducer to scan the tip across the sample (Figure 2a). A feedback loop operates on the scanner to maintain a constant separation between the tip and the sample. Monitoring the position of the scanner provides a precise measurement of the tip s position in three dimensions. The precision of the piezoelectric scanning elements, together with the exponential dependence of A upon c/means that STM is able to provide images of individual atoms. [Pg.88]

In piezoreflectance (PzR), modulation is achieved by mounting the sample on a piezoelectric transducer that varies the lattice constant of the material, producing a band gap modulation. Although PzR is contacdess it requires special mounting of the sample, as does thermomodulation. [Pg.390]

This system consists of a symmetrical pair of lens elements connected by a small volume of liquid. Each lens consists of a single spherical interface between the liquid and a lens rod. The lens element is formed by polishing a small concave spherical surface in the end of a sapphire rod. At the opposite end of the rod, a thin film piezoelectric transducer is centered on the axis of the lens surface. [Pg.28]

An important class of materials that originates from the precursor core-shell particles is hollow capsules. Hollow capsules (or shells ) can be routinely produced upon removal of the core material using chemical and physical methods. Much of the research conducted in the production of uniform-size hollow capsules arises from their scientific and technological interest. Hollow capsules are widely utilized for the encapsulation and controlled release of various substances (e.g., drugs, cosmetics, dyes, and inks), in catalysis and acoustic insulation, in the development of piezoelectric transducers and low-dielectric-constant materials, and for the manufacture of advanced materials [14],... [Pg.505]

The stndy and preparation of hollow capsules has attracted considerable attention in recent years. Hollow capsules are of immense interest in a long list of potential applications. These inclnde drug delivery, gene therapy, catalysis, waste removal, acoustic insulation, piezoelectric transducers, and functional materials [14],... [Pg.515]

Fe which have full width 2r at 0.2 mm s . Other isotopes are less demanding, e.g., Au, for which the lines are ten times wider. Most spectrometers are equipped with electromechanical Mossbauer velocity transducers of the loudspeaker type. This technique is suitable for velocity variations ranging from less than 1 mm s full scale up to several cm s and covers the whole reach of hyperfine splitting for most of the common isotopes. Kalvius, Kankeleit, Cranshaw, and others [1-5] have been pioneers in the field, who laid foundations for the development of high-precision drives with feedback amplifiers for proper linear velocity scales with high stability and low hum. Other techniques for Doppler modulation have been developed for isotopes with extremely narrow hyperfine lines, e.g., Zn. For such isotopes, piezoelectric transducers are mostly used [6, 7], more details of which are found in Sect. 7.2.1. [Pg.27]

Piezoelectric transducers have also been used to instrument automatic capsule filling machines. Mony et al. [72] instrumented a Zanasi RV/59 by fitting a piezoelectric load cell to the upper end of a piston. This... [Pg.359]

An acoustic wave detector, typically a piezoelectric transducer, measures the volume change (see Section HI). This detector is sensitive to the magnitude and the temporal profile of the acoustic wave. As we will see, the amplitude of the wave provides valuable enthalpic information about reactive intermediates, and the temporal profile can reveal the dynamics of these intermediates. [Pg.255]

The experimental design for the photoacoustic experiment is relatively simple. The apparatus is quite similar to that employed for nanosecond absorption spectroscopy with the major difference being that a piezoelectric transducer is used to monitor the acoustic waves rather than a photomultiplier tube to analyze the incident light. A representative schematic for PAC is shown in Fig. 2. [Pg.258]

A variety of piezoelectric transducers have been employed for PAC. Ceramic transducers, usually lead zirconate titanate, are most commonly employed because of their sensitivity, time resolution and commercial availability. However, their acoustic response is often dominated by their own resonance, and so polymeric film detectors, such as polyvinylidenedifluoride, are often used. These piezoelectric materials are non-resonant, but not as sensitive as the ceramic detectors. Again, each detector has its own advantages (and disadvantages).14,15... [Pg.259]
