It is evident that application of Green s theorem cannot eliminate second-order derivatives of the shape functions in the set of working equations of the least-sc[uares scheme. Therefore, direct application of these equations should, in general, be in conjunction with C continuous Hermite elements (Petera and Nassehi, 1993 Petera and Pittman, 1994). However, various techniques are available that make the use of elements in these schemes possible. For example, Bell and Surana (1994) developed a method in which the flow model equations are cast into a set of auxiliary first-order differentia] equations. They used this approach to construct a least-sciuares scheme for non-Newtonian flow equations based on equal-order C° continuous, p-version hierarchical elements. 

The process of X p validation and refinement starts with a final detailed analysis of its realization, through the computation of (yj. XDp) and o (y Xup), k = 0,l,...,K, estimates. If for some reason one or more infimal decision units judge the implementation of X p to be unacceptable, an additional attempt is made to refine the decision policy and find a revised version of it, X p, that is accepted and validated by all infimal decision units, through additional applications of basic to the decision units in conflict with the initial X p version (see Saraiva, 1993 Saraiva and Stephanopoulos, 1992d, for details).

Different spectral preprocessing and transformations available in SIMCA P-p (version 10.0, Umetrics, Sweden) were evaluated and the best approach for data handling and manipulation was determined. Data collected on the surrogate tablets were divided into a training set to generate the PLS models, and prediction set to test the PLS models. MCC powder, equilibrated at different RH, was also roller compacted at different roll speeds on a Fitzpatrick IR220 roller compactor fitted with smooth rolls. Powder feed rate and roll pressure were kept constant for all experiments. The key sample attributes measured on the surrogate tablets were also measured for the samples prepared by roller compaction.
