Various functional forms for / have been proposed either as a result of empirical observation or in terms of specific models. A particularly important example of the latter is that known as the Langmuir adsorption equation [2]. By analogy with the derivation for gas adsorption (see Section XVII-3), the Langmuir model assumes the surface to consist of adsorption sites, each having an area a. All adsorbed species interact only with a site and not with each other, and adsorption is thus limited to a monolayer. Related lattice models reduce to the Langmuir model under these assumptions [3,4]. In the case of adsorption from solution, however, it seems more plausible to consider an alternative phrasing of the model. Adsorption is still limited to a monolayer, but this layer is now regarded as an ideal two-dimensional solution of equal-size solute and solvent molecules of area a. Thus lateral interactions, absent in the site picture, cancel out in the ideal solution however, in the first version is a properly of the solid lattice, while in the second it is a properly of the adsorbed species. Both models attribute differences in adsorption behavior entirely to differences in adsorbate-solid interactions. Both present adsorption as a competition between solute and solvent. [Pg.391]

A series of tests were performed at the AFC s National Reactor Testing Station in Idaho, starting in 1953. The reactor was situated outdoors, and was operated remotely. The core of the first version had fuel assembhes of aluminum and enriched uranium plates of the Materials Testing Reactor (MTR) type, installed in a water tank. One of the five control rods could be ejected downward and out of the core by spring action upon intermption of a magnet... [Pg.217]

In the first version with a mobile phase of constant composition and with single developments of the bilayer in both dimensions, a 2-D TLC separation might be achieved which is the opposite of classical 2-D TLC on the same monolayer stationary phase with two mobile phases of different composition. Unfortunately, the use of RP-18 and silica as the bilayer is rather complicated, because the solvent used in the first development modifies the stationary phase, and unless it can be easily and quantitatively removed during the intermediate drying step or, alternatively, the modification can be performed reproducibly, this can result in inadequate reproducibility of the separation system from sample to sample. It is therefore suggested instead that two single plates be used. After the reversed-phase (RP) separation and drying of the plate, the second, normal-phase, plate can be coupled to the first (see Section 8.10 below). [Pg.177]

The first system designed to perform these basics was developed in 1989 [2]. In early 1990, a first version of 5000 entries was made available to the scientific community on an IBM PC DOS-based program ChemBase. Now, some 10 years later, the database has increased to several tens of thousands of entries, and the entire system can be searched with the powerful ISIS software [3] as rapidly as it was searched on the old computer systems. [Pg.96]

CAM-PC is a general purpose CA software simulation environment based on CAM-6, Designed by members of the GENOME Project at Eotvos University in Hungary, the first version of CAM-PC extends the possibilities of CAM-6 but is not yet fully compatible with it. The primary addition is support for 8 bit planes, increasing the size of CAM-6 s ccdl-statc alphabet to 256, The laudable purpose behind the project is to provide inexpensive but otherwise fully functional simulation tools for amateur researchers unable to afford faster dedicatcxl hardware. [Pg.718]

It appears that, in the space of a single day, February 17 th 1869, Mendeleev not only began to make horizontal comparisons but also produced the first version of a full periodic table that included most of the known elements. Moreover, Mendeleev s overall approach consists of looking at atomic weight differences in conformity with the general principle of triads even though he was not specifically identifying triads in the manner of Dobereiner. [Pg.120]

A perfect cooperation between phases is the ideal for an optimum behaviour of the composite. A good indication of this cooperation is given, either by the adhesion coefficient A, as defined by the first version of the unfolding model, or by the exponent 2r defined by its second version. [Pg.174]

The first version of a polarographic technique was put forward in 1922 by the Czech scientist Jaroslav Heyrovsky. Classsical polarography is the measurement of quasisteady-state polarization curves with linear potential scans applied to the DME sufficiently slowly (v between 1 and 20mV/s), so that within the lifetime, of an individual drop, the potential would not change by more than 3 to 5 mV. With special instruments (polarographs), one can record the resulting 7 vs. E curves (polaro-grams) automatically. [Pg.391]

The first version of SPPS to be developed used the t-Boc group as the amino-protecting group. f-Boc can be cleaved with relatively mild acidic treatment and TFA is usually used. The original coupling reagents utilized for SPPS were carbodiimides. In addition to dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCCI), N, (V -diisopropylcarbodiimide (DIPCDI) is often used. The mechanism of peptide coupling by carbodiimides was... [Pg.1246]

Development of the Environmental Policy Integrated Climate (EPIC) model and its predecessor, the Erosion Productivity Impact Calculator, began in the early 1980s.69 70 The first version of EPIC was intended to evaluate the effects of wind and water erosion on plant growth and food production. More recent versions also evaluate factors important to other environmental issues. EPIC is a onedimensional model however, it can estimate lateral flow in soil layers at depth. All versions of EPIC estimate surface runoff, PET, AET, soil-water storage, and PRK below the root zone—these complete the hydrologic water balance for an ET landfill cover. [Pg.1075]

Here then is the logic behind the first version of the chemical-imbalance theory. Iproniazid is a monamine oxidase inhibitor - it inhibits the oxidation of norepinephrine and serotonin in the synapses, thereby leaving more of these neurotransmitters available in the brain. When depressed people take iproniazid, they get better. Therefore insufficient norepinephrine and/or serotonin causes depression.12... [Pg.86]

There was a problem with this first version of the biochemical theory of depression. Iproniazid was not the only drug that had been reported to be effective as an antidepressant. Imipramine, the drug that had been tested by the Swiss psychiatrist Roland Kuhn, seemed to have similar effects. But imipramine is not an MAOI it does not inhibit the destruction of neurotransmitters in the synapse. So if antidepressants worked by inhibiting monoamine oxidase, why was imipramine effective How could its apparent effectiveness be reconciled with the chemical-imbalance theory ... [Pg.86]

The first version of the model was developed in 1991-1992. In the EPS system, the impacts are expressed in terms of socio-economic costs (or values) occurring by unit effects of damage to five safeguards subjects human health, biological diversity, ecosystem production, natural resources and aesthetic values. The latest version was published in 1999 [37, 38]. [Pg.128]

The present version of the book represents a completely revised update of the first edition as it appeared in 1993. Significant new developments in e.g. the scanning probe microscopies, imaging and vibrational techniques called for revision and additions to the respective chapters. But also the other chapters have been updated with recent examples, and references to relevant new literature. Many figures from the first version of the book have been improved to make them more informative. The chapter with case studies has been expanded with an example on polymerization catalysts. [Pg.11]

Any model railroad enthusiast will recognize this as a neat kit of parts with which you could build a lot of different projects—many more potential products than the number of components in the box. Note the ease of modifying the first version to realize the second. It s not difficult to imagine such a kit in hardware nor to visualize it in software. The Motor could be a software component controlling a hardware motor the Buttons, Meter, and Selector could be user-interface widgets and the other components could be objects not directly visible to the user. [Pg.429]
