VEHICLE SHELL

Bonded sheet metal structures are inherently stiffer than their spot-welded equivalents. In the case of box section beams the flexural stiffness and ultimate strength can be doubled by changing from a welded to a bonded form of construction. Bonded doublers are also very effective. By implication, the stiffness of a vehicle shell will reflect the increased stiffness of its bonded sub-components. Therefore attention must be paid to the relative performance of the various major body sections in order that the vehicle will crumple correctly when it is impacted in an accident. [Pg.197]

Phospholipid molecules form bilayer films or membranes about 5 nm in thickness as illustrated in Fig. XV-10. Vesicles or liposomes are closed bilayer shells in the 100-1000-nm size range formed on sonication of bilayer forming amphiphiles. To add surface area, the supports are uniformly coated with a slurry of gamma-alumina and recalcined under moderate conditions. The wash coat acts to accept the active metals, typically low levels of platinum and palladium, in a conventional impregnation process. In the United States in passenger car apphcations the spherical catalyst is used almost exclusively, and methods have been developed to replace the catalyst without removing the converter shell when vehicle inspection reveals that emission standards are not met. [Pg.198]

Figure 16.1 shows part of a steel tank which came from a road tank vehicle. The tank consisted of a cylindrical shell about 6 m long. A hemispherical cap was welded to each end of the shell with a circumferential weld. The tank was used to transport liquid ammonia. In order to contain the liquid ammonia the pressure had to be equal to the saturation pressure (the pressure at which a mixture of liquid and vapour is in equilibrium). The saturation pressure increases rapidly with temperature at 20°C the absolute pressure is 8.57 bar at 50°C it is 20.33 bar. The gauge pressure at 50°C is 19.33 bar, or 1.9MN m . Because of this the tank had to function as a pressure vessel. The maximum operating pressure was 2.07 MN m" gauge. This allowed the tank to be used safely to 50°C, above the maximum temperature expected in even a hot climate. [Pg.155]

Wave propagation in an inhomogeneous anisotropic material such as a fiber-reinforced composite material is a very complex subject. However, its study is motivated by many important applications such as the use of fiber-reinforced composites in reentry vehicle nosetips, heatshields, and other protective systems. Chou [6-56] gives an introduction to analysis of wave propagation in composite materials. Others have applied wave propagation theory to shell stress problems. [Pg.362]

Soft gelatin capsules are not an inexpensive dosage form, particularly when compared to direct compression tablets [3]. There is a more intimate contact between the shell and its liquid contents than exists with dry-filled hard gelatin capsules, which increases the possibility of interactions. Polymer micelles are nanometer sized (usually several tens of nanometers) self-assembled particles having a hydrophobic core and hydrophilic outer shell composed of amphiphilic AB- or ABA-type block copolymers, and are utilized as drug delivery vehicles. The first polymer micelle-type drug delivery vehicle was made of PEG-b-poly(aspartic acid) (PEG-b-PAsp), immobilizing the hydro-phobic anticancer drugDXR [188-191]. The production of GTL is considered to be an alternative to liquefied natural gas (LNG), specifically when focusing on the end-product vehicle fuel and not the long distance transport of energy. In 1993, a first large-scale GTL plant was erected by Shell in Bintulu, Sarawak in Malaysia, based on Fischer-Tropsch synthesis.
