C or higher for the kaolin-based products to 1425°C and above for the zirconium-containing materials. At temperatures above 1000°C these ceramic fibers tend to devitrify and partially crystallize. Specially prepared ceramic fibers are used to protect space vehicles on re-entry and can withstand temperatures above 1250°C (see Ablative materials Refractory fibers). [Pg.69]

Anhydrous lithium hydroxide [1310-65-2], LiOH, is obtained by heating the monohydrate above 100°C. The salt melts at 462°C. Anhydrous lithium hydroxide is an extremely efficient absorbent for carbon dioxide (qv). The porous stmcture of the salt allows complete conversion to the carbonate with no efficiency loss in the absorption process. Thus LiOH has an important role in the removal of carbon dioxide from enclosed breathing areas such as on submarines or space vehicles. About 750 g of lithium hydroxide is required to absorb the carbon dioxide produced by an individual in a day. [Pg.226]

Exploratory Study of Potassium and Sodium Superoxides forOuygen Control in Manned Space Vehicles, Contract No. NASW-90, MSA Research Corp., Evans City, Pa., Mar. 1962. [Pg.489]

Earth to space (sateUite) to earth communication links are relatively insensitive to ionospheric disturbances. Communications between earth and manned space vehicles are barely affected by plasmas when the spaceships are well away from the atmosphere, eg, in orbit or in a translunar trajectory. However, during reentry of a spaceship, a low temperature plasma forms around the vehicle and intermpts the communication links to it (183). Plasmas are incidental to the performance of modem rockets used to explore the solar system. [Pg.117]

Oxirane is used as a fumigant for grain and a sterilant e.g. for space vehicles bound for putative abodes of life), but mainly for the manufacture of 1,2-ethanediol ( ethylene glycol ), emulsifiers, plastics and resins (below), plasticizers, synthetic rubber and synthetic fibers. Methyloxirane is used mainly to make detergents, hydraulic fiuids and lubricants. [Pg.118]
