Service station

AH motor fuel in the United States is manufactured by private companies. Many of these are vertically integrated. That is, the same company finds the cmde oil or buys it from a producing government, refines it into finished products, and then sells to independent retailers who specialize in that company s blended products or sells at company operated service stations. There are also a significant number of companies that participate in only some aspects of the business cycle such as refining or marketing. [Pg.178]

Dyes. Dyes are added to gasoline to impart color for a number of reasons. Originally, these compounds were used to identify leaded gasoline so that it would not be used for other inappropriate purposes, such as solvents. Dyes are used to identify different gasoline grades so that pipeline companies can separate tenders, and so that service stations can easily check that the correct grade was placed in the underground tanks (aq). Dyes are usually based on a2o chemistry and are added in concentrations below 10 ppm (see Azo dyes). [Pg.186]

Initially, at least, methanol vehicles should be capable of operating on either M85, gasoline, or any mixture of the two. These vehicles are caHed flexible fueled (EEV) or variable fueled vehicles (VEV). It is expected that methanol could be sold in existing service stations out of tanks constmcted of methanol-tolerant material such as carbon steel or certain fiber glass formulations. EventuaHy, if enough EEV/VEVs are sold and methanol becomes widely avaHable, dedicated vehicles would likely be buHt and sold. Methanol has been used for years as a racing fuel. [Pg.195]

Olefin oligomers are used widely as automotive lubricants. They often are combiaed with some of the organic esters as base fluids ia engine oils, gear oils, and hydrauHc fluids, eg, for equipment intended for operation ia extremely cold climates, and for premium oils, eg, for the service station market ia temperate climates. [Pg.272]

In some service stations, stainless steel or aluminum materials are used for all the filters, pipes and fittings to maintain the purity of the fuel. The rest potentials of these materials are different from that of plain carbon steel (see Table 2-4). [Pg.304]

The safety valves of other cars operated, thereby releasing more LPG. At 7 33 a m., the twenty-seventh car ruptured with explosive force. Four fragments were hurled in different directions (Figure 2.21). The east end of the car dug a crater in the track structure, and was then hurled about 180 m (600 ft) eastward. The west end of the car was hurled in a southwesterly direction for a total distance of about 90 m (300 ft). This section struck and collapsed the roof of a gasoline service station. Two other sizable portions of the tank were hurled in a southwesterly direction and came to rest at points 180 m (600 ft) and 230 m (750 ft) from the tank. [Pg.30]

A motorist fills his tank at a Union 76 service station where two out of three grades of gasoline cost more than 2 per gallon (March 7, 2000). West Coast fuel prices on the spot market shot up in reaction to the highest oil prices in nearly a decade. (Corbis-Bettmann)... [Pg.359]

The industry has developed higher compression tanks to expand the range, and more fast-fill stations are becoming available, yet the prospects of the majority of service stations adding compressed natural gas refueling anytime in the near future are bleak. The oil companies, which control most of the service stations and over 60 percent of America s natural gas reserves, are not eager to make the massive infrastructure investment to cannibalize the billions of dollars they have tied up in refineries, pipelines, and service sta-... [Pg.831]

The advantage of a fuel cell over a conventional battery is that the fuel for electrical power can be replenished easily. Just as we pull into a service station to refill the gas tank, owners of automobiles powered by fuel cells will refill their fiiel tanks with hydrogen or butane. [Pg.1404]
