In a much larger survey of 93,399 subjects participating in non-therapeutic research in the United States, 37 subjects were reported to be temporarily disabled and one to be permanently disabled. The latter was due to a stroke occurring 3 days after investigation, and its attributability is unknown. [Pg.158]

In the past, various individuals and organisations have claimed to own the data produced from a clinical trial, including the state, the sponsor, the investigator and, in some cases, the patient or study subject. It is certainly true that with the advent of the EU Directive on Data Protection, the claim of ownership to his or her data by the patient or study subject has been strengthened. Unfortunately, there is no clear ownership of clinical data except that of society. Even then, society needs to respect the confidentiality and other wishes of individual subjects who have been clinical trial participants. Is there a difference in ownership between data produced from product-driven research to that produced in policy-driven therapeutic research ... [Pg.232]

In product-driven therapeutic research, the pharmaceutical company must satisfy the regulatory and government agencies as well as the prescribers that the new product is effective, safe and meets the qualities required of GMP. The institutions that will pay for the drug -an insurance company or a government health authority - will need to be convinced that the product is good value. In return, the pharmaceutical company may, at some time in the future, recoup sufficient profit to pay the shareholders but also to pay for the development of the product. In the past, pharmaceutical companies... [Pg.232]

Fundamental healthcare issues may also be involved in the situation of policy-driven therapeutic research. The future investment of society in health may require a large-scale national clinical trial to answer questions relating to the prevention of disease or premature death. This type of clinical trial will not simply relate to one manufacturer s product. As such, it is preferable that the trial is organised on a national level, not necessarily with the exclusion of the company(s) involved. An independent data-monitoring committee (IDMC) should oversee the clinical trial with as much support from the pharmaceutical company(s) as possible. The clinical data collected belongs to the state and should be treated with the same quality standards as any pharmaceutical company sponsored study. [Pg.233]

Most UK ethics committees will look for confirmation of the intention to apply the ABPl guidelines in the case of company-sponsored studies, even from non-member companies. Where the research is non-therapeutic, ABPl guidance provides for a contractual promise to be made to the volunteer to pay for injury sustained by reason of participation in the study (whether due to the experimental drugs used or to procedures required by the study protocol), irrespective of whether anyone conducting or responsible for the project was at fault. In therapeutic research, no such contractual relationship or obligation is required, and there are some limitations to the circumstances in which voluntary payment will be made. [Pg.396]

In the following paragraphs we will attempt to determine more precisely the value and position of psychopharmaceuticals in the treatment of mental disorders. This will be done on the basis of a literature survey referring, with few exceptions, to comparative studies between two or more forms of therapy. Historically, the following tendencies can be detected in this area of comparative therapeutic research ... [Pg.262]

Can this be a fitting model Is this conceptual scheme acceptable in the cases of English or Swedish research subjects, who can access a universal system of healthcare and who voluntarily enter a research program In the situation of "therapeutic research," the proposal seems fair (the conclusion of this analysis will be different in the case of non-therapeutic research. In this second case, there seems to be more similarities to contractors). However, even in this case, consider the dependence of the illness or condition of the research subjects on the research product, that is, the number of therapeutic options on which to decide. If they have an ample supply of therapies, they are in a better position to choose than if they have no therapeutic alternative whatsoever. They may have the "best proven care" or they may try a new, possibly better, therapy. They can calculate risks and benefits and then decide. This might represent this position if we do not consider, amongst other variables, the severity of certain fatal illnesses and the stressful situation an ill person may be experiencing. [Pg.220]

Another contribution of gene cloning is the expression in transfected CHO cells of the N-terminal and C-terminal part of ACE (206). It has also allowed a more in-depth characterization of ACE inhibitors at its two active sites in the presence of different substrates, including N-acetyl (SDKP), whose hemoregulatory properties and physiological role are now being defined and which may become a target for future therapeutic research (207-210). In the meantime, the measurement of N-acetyl SDKP in plasma and urines may be a tool for the follow-up evaluation of patients compliance with ACE inhibitors (211). [Pg.41]

But George W. Merck didn t want to rely on professors handouts. He would create labs that would be as good as and look just like those in the university. To do so, the company brought in respected academics like Max Tishler of Harvard and Alfred Newton Richards of the University of Pennsylvania. It set up a new pharmacological lab, the Merck Institute of Therapeutic Research, with its own board of directors. [Pg.24]

The retina is the most accessible part of the central nervous system and its morphology and functional properties have been well characterized. Future neu-ropharmacological/ therapeutical research may take advantage of the retina in PD. Although the inner retina has been shown to be significantly thinned in over two thirds of PD patients, the presence of alpha synuclein has not been established. [Pg.281]

Good therapeutic research alters clinical practice. [Pg.52]

The first ethical principles of biomedical research had already been developed in Germany prior to World War I relevant instructions were issued by the Prussian Education Office in 1900. At the proposal of the German National Health Board, guidelines for modern curative treatment and for the performance of scientific studies in humans were issued in 1931 by the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Germany. The following year (1932), P. Martini published his methodology of therapeutic research, and in 1937 A.B. Hill established the principles of medical statistics. [Pg.845]
