Obviously, the greater the number of subjects studied, the larger the cost. Nevertheless, having too few subjects may lead to inconclusive results, requiring that the study be repeated. Another important consideration is the availability of qualified participants. If the inclusion and exclusion criteria are very restrictive, the cost of recruiting subjects may exceed that of the actual testing. In pharmaceutical development trials, it is not unusual to see recruitment budgets of US 500- 1000 per randomized subject. Thus, for a Phase III development study with several hundred participants, often more than US 500 000 in cost is allotted to efforts to identify qualified subjects who are interested in participation. [Pg.247]

Autopsy tissues and other biologic specimens from people fatally poisoned with endrin (by the oral or an unspecified route) were analyzed (Tewari and Sharma 1978). In the past decade Raman spectroscopy has assumed an important role in musculoskeletal tissue studies, especially in bone tissue studies. Applications to a wide range of problems in basic biology, biomechanics, and medicine have appeared in the journal literature. Most workers have used cell cultures or excised bone tissue, including human biopsy and cadaveric tissue. We expect that Raman spectroscopy will become increasingly important in such studies, as more life scientists and engineers learn how to employ it. Just as importantly, recent reports of non-invasive spectroscopy suggest that Raman spectroscopy may have a role in human subjects studies of bone development, function, and disease. [Pg.361]
