Cannabinoids are the psychoactive components of marijuana, which has the species name Cannabis sativa. Concentrations of cannabinoids vary greatly from plant to plant. The original strains of this plant species contain very little of these psychoactive components and have been used for many centuries for their great fiber qualities. Strains of Cannabis that may be smoked for psychoactive effects on average contain about 4 percent cannabinoid derivatives. The most active of these derivatives is the compound A9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), shown in Figure 14.33 on page 504. [Pg.503]

Early in vitro and in vivo studies indicated that marijuana as well as cannabinoids derivative of this plant, particularly THC, had immunosuppressive properties. These compounds were found to exert a wide range of effects on a variety of immune functions from a diverse array of immune cell types. Such effects were observed for immune cells derivative of various rodents and for cell lines exhibiting... [Pg.388]

The analgesic properties of cannabinoid derivatives are well known, though no such drugs have yet been demonstrated to be substantially free from the CNS side effects to which cannabis sativa owes its popularity as a substance of abuse. However, cannabinoid analgesia has appeal due to its opioid-independent mechanism and its conseguent failure to induce dependence.A series of preliminary reports " have described the syntheses of analgesics modelled on 9-nor-9-B-hydroxyhexahvdrocannabinol compound Jl8 was the most potent member (>60 X morphine). ... [Pg.6]

A -frar s-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the major psychoactive (euphoriant) constituent of marijuana. Cannabis sativa. The synthetic form of THC (dronabinol) was approved approximately 20 years ago to treat nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy, and it has been used for a lesser amount of time to treat appetite loss in patients with HIV/AIDS (44). More recently, an approximately 1 1 mixture of THC and the structurally related marijuana constituent cannabidiol has been approved in Canada for the alleviation of neuropathic pain and spasticity fcr patients with multiple sclerosis and is administered in low doses as a buccal spray (53). Ccnsiderable interest exists in using cannabinoid derivatives based on THC for medicinal purpcses, but it is necessary to minimize the central nervous system effects of these compounds. [Pg.35]
