Medline covers primarily biomedical literature, containing more than 13 million citations (October, 2002) of articles from more than 4600 journals published since 1958 [18]. The database covers basic biomedical research, clinical sciences, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, pre-clinical sciences, and life science. Medline, a subset of PubMed, is a bibliographic database produced by the US Nationcil Library of Medicine (NLM). The database is available free of charge via SciFinder Scholar or PubMed [19]. [Pg.241]

Ongoing epinephrine research relevant to human anaphylaxis is critically important. In its absence, the use of epinephrine in anaphylaxis treatment in the 21st century will continue to be based mostly on clinical experience, or worse, on expedience, instead of on clinical science. [Pg.220]

In this chapter, we describe some of the advances in biocomputation that have impacted or potentially will impact pharmaceutical research and development. We list them by biological size, going from the most to the least organized, or from the most complex to the least complex. We focus on clinical sciences in particular, because we feel that simplified, but useful representations of pharmacological interventions have the greatest potential for... [Pg.516]

To help protect the rights and welfare of volunteers and verify the quality and integrity of data submitted for review, the FDA performs inspections of clinical trial study sites and anyone involved in the research, says David A. Lepay, M.D., Ph.D., senior advisor for clinical science and director of the FDA s Good Clinical Practice Program. Lepay says that the quality of clinical trials has improved markedly since the agency started inspecting them back in 1977. [Pg.255]

The second section on clinical science has been increased by two chapters to accommodate the increase in the numbers of drugs and advances in knowledge about psychiatric disorders. Three new neurotransmitter systems are introduced and illustrated substance P and the neurokinin family nitric oxide and the endocannabi-noids such as anandamide (the brain s own marijuana ). Also amplified is coverage of the classical neurotransmitter systems, especially intercommunications now illustrated between serotonin and dopamine and between norepinephrine/noradrenaline and serotonin. Also included are numerous new illustrations of noradrenergic and cholinergic pathways. [Pg.655]

A peer review panel was assembled for chlorobenzene. The panel consisted of the following members Dr. David Jollow, Professor in the Department of Pharmacology, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, South Carolina Dr. Henry Peters, Professor in the Department of Neurology, University of Wisconsin Clinical Science Center, Madison, Wisconsin Dr. Jay B. Silkworth, Research Scientist, Wadsworth Center Labs, New York Department of Health, Albany, New York Dr. Frank Lu, Private Toxicology Consultant. Miami, Florida Dr. James Pollard, Private Consultant, Las Vegas, Nevada. These experts collectively have knowledge of chlorobenzene s physical and chemical properties, toxicokinetics, key health end points, mechanisms of action, human and animal exposure, and quantification of risk to humans. All reviewers were selected in conformity with the conditions for peer review specified in Section 104(i)(13) of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, as amended. [Pg.96]
