The need for cell cultures for tests with viruses requires the incorporation of controls over and above those necessary for working with bacteria. In addition to cell culture controls to demonstrate lack of contamination and vims controls to demonstrate a functioning assay system, the level of input vims and the loss in virus infectivity upon the drying of the inoculum on the carrier need to be measured. In some cases, these measurements are only made once and the data used with a series of tests. However, it is recommended that, for proper accuracy, such measurements should be included with every test due to inherent variations in cell cultures and viruses. When there is a need to separate virus kill from simple mechanical removal of the test vims during the test, it is recommended that a control also be included to determine the mechanical removal of the test virus standard hard water should be used for this purpose in place of the test topical product. For any claim of topical antisepsis, reduction in the vims titer on treatment with the test product must be substantially higher than that obtained with the standard hard water treatment alone.

Wound-healing effects of the flowers have been demonstrated in various animal tests. Proposed flux models for porous media invariably contain adjustable parameters whose values must be determined from suitably designed flow or diffusion measurements, and further measurements may be made to test the relative success of different models. This may involve extensive programs of experimentation, and the planning and interpretation of such work forms the topic of Chapter 10, However, there is in addition a relatively small number of experiments of historic importance which establish certain general features of flow and diffusion in porous media. These provide criteria which must be satisfied by any proposed flux model and are therefore of central importance in Che subject. They may be grouped into three classes. 

Porphyrins and chlorophylls are the most widespread natural pigments. They are associated with the energy-converting processes of respiration and photosynthesis in living organisms, and the synthesis of specific porphyrin derivatives is often motivated by the desire to perform similar processes in the test tube. The structurally and biosynthetically related corrins (e.g. vitamin B,j) catalyze alkylations and rearrangements of carbon skeletons via organocobalt intermediates. In principle, the three parts can be taken up in any order without too much interruption in continuity. Within each of the parts there is more carryover from chapter to chapter, so rearranging the sequence of topics within a given part is less convenient. The book contains more material than can be covered in an ordinary course. Chapter 1 plus two of the three parts contain about the right amount of material for one term. In classroom testing the material, I allowed the class to decide—while we worked on Chapter 1—which two of the other parts they wished to cover this worked very well.

It does not cover other aspects of these topics that affect operation, maintenance, or nonha2ardous deterioration. 

Nondestmctive tests differ from methods of laboratory analysis and testing where specimens are generally sectioned, broken, damaged, or destroyed. Nondestmctive tests can be performed on materials, components, and stmctures or systems that actually are to be used. Thus, effective use of NDE requires engineering knowledge of the stmcture, the performance characteristics, and service environment, as well as the test method. The second aspect of quahty documentation is to detail how the work processes referred to in the manual are performed. The QA unit is often the organization responsible for issuing a set of procedures designed to assure conformance to the appropriate standards or to company poHcy. The procedures, often called standard operation procedures (SOP) or quahty operating procedures (QOP), should include such topics as customer complaints, audit protocols, stabihty testing, preparation of COAs, test method vahdation, etc.

Many groups throughout the world tried to repeat the experiments using similar in vitro assays and other test systems, but without success. Current experimental data suggest additive interactions do occur between EDs, but the issue of interactive effects, and synergism in particular, will undoubtedly remain a topic of intense debate for some time to come. 

CEFIC has undertaken a wide-ranging programme of research in cooperation with similar organizations throughout the world. The major topics covered by this three-year programme, costing 7m in Europe and 20m worldwide, are male reproductive health, wildlife exposure and testing methods.
