Mechanical engineering

Rapid advances in computer technology, resulting in ever smaller, less costly, high-performance computers, have resulted in a vast number of applications containing embedded computers as elements. These range from highly complex communications systems to biomedical imaging devices, sophisticated consumer products, and household appliances. [Pg.27]

In the power specialty, mechanical engineers are involved in the design, production, and operation of hydranlic turbines for driving electric generators and of boilers, engines, turbines, and pumps for the development of steam power. They design and operate power plants and concern themselves with the economical combustion of fuels, the conversion of heat energy into mechanical power, and the use of that power to perform useful work. [Pg.27]

In heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, mechanical engineers provide controlled conditions of temperature and humidity in homes, offices. [Pg.27]

Mechanical engineers work closely with industrial engineers and managers in many fields of manufacturing, designing imaginative machinery and systems that yield great economies in production. [Pg.28]

Mechanical engineering is a broad field that deals with diverse engineering problems. Its members can often be found in interdisciplinary activities such as automation, computer technology, and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). [Pg.28]

Pressure Vessels and Piping. Some of the most critical components of a chemical plant involve pressure vessels. A thorough knowledge of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Pressure Vessel Code (75) is essential for design and maintenance of chemical plants.
