Role playing

A second series of additives comprises those that improve the octane number (see Chapter 5). We will examine in succession the role played by these additives, substances currently used, and the future prospects concerning additives in this area. [Pg.349]

An important aspect of the stabilization of emulsions by adsorbed films is that of the role played by the film in resisting the coalescence of two droplets of inner phase. Such coalescence involves a local mechanical compression at the point of encounter that would be resisted (much as in the approach of two boundary lubricated surfaces discussed in Section XII-7B) and then, if coalescence is to occur, the discharge from the surface region of some of the surfactant material. [Pg.505]

Tr(/ ), that would provide an optimal eooling strategy. This last observation is the enix of our eooling theory and puts into sharp perspeetive the role played by the external field while the external field eaimot itself ehange the purity of the system it ean perfomi purity-preserving transformations whieh subsequently affeet the rate of ehange of purity. [Pg.277]

Another example of the role played by a nonradiative relaxation pathway is found in the photochemistry of octatetraene. Here, the fluorescence lifetime is found to decrease dramatically with increasing temperature [175]. This can be assigned to the opening up of an efficient nonradiative pathway back to the ground state [6]. In recent years, nonradiative relaxation pathways have been frequently implicated in organic photochemistry, and a number of articles published on this subject [4-8]. [Pg.276]

The equation does not take into account such pertubation factors as steric effects, solvent effects, and ion-pair formation. These factors, however, may be neglected when experiments are carried out in the same solvent at the same temperature and concentration for an homogeneous set of substrates. So, for a given ambident nucleophile the rate ratio kj/kj will depend on A and B, which vary with (a) the attacked electrophilic center, (b) the solvent, and (c) the counterpart cationic species of the anion. The important point in this kind of study is to change only one parameter at a time. This simple rule has not always been followed, and little systematic work has been done in this field (12) stiH widely open after the discovery of the role played by single electron transfer mechanism in ambident reactivity (1689). [Pg.6]

Much of the development of the chemistry of sulfanilamidoselenazole derivatives is a result of the important role played by sulfonamides in chemotherapy and more particularly the good activity of sulfathiazoie against bacterial infections. Backer and De Jonge (441 prepared these derivatives by reaction of 2-amino-4-methyl- and 2-aminO-4-phenyl-selenazoles with A -acetylsulfanilic acid chloride in pyridine.. Alkaline... [Pg.248]

There will be a few pauses along the way as we stop to examine some biochemical roles played by these compounds independent of their genetic one... [Pg.1155]

The importance of the role played by the adsorbed film can be appreciated by picturing the progressive emptying of a pore system initially full up at relative pressure pjp", as the relative pressure is lowered in steps lo P2/P° pores be divided into groups 1,2, etc. having re-... [Pg.133]

To develop a more quantitative relationship between particle size and T j, suppose we consider the melting behavior of the cylindrical crystal sketched in Fig. 4.4. Of particular interest in this model is the role played by surface effects. The illustration is used to define a model and should not be taken too literally, especially with respect to the following points ... [Pg.212]

The deleterious effect of some fat substitutes has been demonstrated in cake frosting (27) the result is an unacceptable frosting, filled with air bubbles. In another example, some low fat cheeses are quite acceptable when cold, but when heated result in a product texture that changes to a sticky, gummy mass. Attempts to replace fat must be viewed as a total systems approach (28,29). It is likely that no one material will replace fats in food rather, replacement will consist of mixtures with each ingredient addressing one or more of the roles played by fats in food. [Pg.117]

The level of quahty required in a LIMS is related to the particular role played by the system in the organi2ation s business. In an R D environment, for example, the primary reason for a LIMS might be to compare and document new analytical methods. [Pg.517]

A left-handed double-heUcal stmcture has been proposed for geUan in the crystalline state, based on x-ray diffraction studies (227). The presence of acetyl groups presumably dismpts interchain aggregation, since these groups are postulated to be on the outside of the heUces. The role played by acetyl and glyceryl ester groups and their influence on the double-heUcal stmcture has been studied using computet models (232). [Pg.299]

In classic electro-thermal atomizer the process of formation of the analytical signal is combination of two processes the analyte supply (in the process of evaporation) and the analyte removal (by diffusion of the analyte from the atomizer). In double stage atomizer a very significant role plays the process of conductive transfer of the analyte form the evaporator to the atomizer itself and this makes the main and a principle difference of these devices. Additionally to the named difference arises the problem with optimization of the double stage atomizer as the amount of design pai ameters and possible combination of operation pai ameters significantly increases. [Pg.84]

Huller and Baetz [1988] have undertaken a numerical study of the role played by shaking vibrations. The vibration was supposed to change the phase of the rotational potential V (p — a(t)). The phase a(t) was a stochastic classical variable subject to the Langevin equation... [Pg.123]

Some 20 years after the pressure for the creation of the new interdisciplinary laboratories was first felt, one of the academics who became involved very early on. Prof. Rustum Roy of Pennsylvania State University, wrote eloquently about the underlying ideal of interdisciplinarity (Roy 1977). He also emphasised the supportive role played by some influential industrial scientists in that creation, notably Dr. Guy Suits of GE, whom we have already encountered, and Dr. William Baker of Bell Laboratories who was a major force in pushing for interdisciplinary materials research in industry and academe alike. A magisterial survey by Baker (1967), under the title Solid State Science and Materials Development, indicates the breadth and scope of his scientific interests. [Pg.12]

Interpretation of reaction stereochemistry has focused attention on the role played by bridged halonium ions. [Pg.362]

The role played by the various ingredients in the composition of sealant, and in particular on the durability of adhesion has been discussed recently [77]. Inert plasticizers, such as trimethylsilyl-endblocked-PDMS, are typically added to silicone sealant compositions in order to adjust the rheology of the uncured sealant. They result in a reduction of the modulus and hardness of the cured sealant. Differences in the durability of silicone sealants are found to be due to differences in their cure chemistry, and more specifically to the nature and... [Pg.700]

The important role played by the quinicines (rubatoxanones, quina-toxines) in the syntheses of the dihydrocinchona alkaloids and the possibility that such substances might be used for the preparation of products approaching quinine in therapeutical interest, has led to the production of a large number of quinolyl ketones of various types and the corresponding secondary alcohols, and other derivatives obtainable from them, of which mention may be made of Rubtzov s syntheses of several isomerides of dihydroquinine. ... [Pg.460]

Role playing. Very effective for demonstrating management techniques, simulating system cc nponents, and stimulating interaction. Requires a competent facilitator cannot be reproduced. [Pg.172]

Electrostatic effects have long been recognized in commercial HPLC columns for SEC of proteins (15,21,22). The usual remedy is to add 100 mM salt to the mobile phase. This works here too the Lys and Asp peaks collapse into the Gly peak with 100 mM salt (Eig. 8.8). High concentrations of sodium sulfate were added to determine the role played in SEC by hydrophobic interactions (sodium sulfate, a structure-forming salt, strengthens such interactions). Sodium sulfate increased the retention only of the most hydrophobic amino acids to any extent, and then only when the concentration approached 1 M. Clearly, hydrophobic interaction cannot account for the elution order of amino acids on PolyHEA. [Pg.257]

One of the triumphs of the science of nutrition is the careful investigation that linked childhood rickets with vitamin D deficiency. This work, which led to methods for treating the disease, is too familiar to need repetition. A direct consequence of these efforts was the elucidation of the pivotal role played by vitamin D in calcium metabolism, as well as the structural studies that revealed that this compound (102) is in fact a steroid derivative. The past... [Pg.101]

He also points out several times the important evidential role played by the success of Mendeleev s contrapredictions —the corrections of atomic weight values previously assigned to already known elements—such as beryllium, uranium and tellurium—so that they fitted into his table smoothly. And indeed the most elaborate statement of Brush s general conclusion seems to be the following ... [Pg.67]

But, to repeat, the extent of the diffusion of Mendeleev s scheme is not the issue here—no one disputes that this was widely (though not universally) accepted by 1890 in the scientifically advanced countries. The question at issue is the relative strength of the roles played in this diffusion by evidence of various sorts and in particular by the successful predictions of new elements. [Pg.72]

The effect of acids on 2-alkylfurans was discussed in Section III-A-l-c). It was remarked that 2,5-disubstituted furans are less reactive in this context than mono-substituted derivatives. This observation again points to the important role played by a free C-5 position in resinification processes. [Pg.91]
