General Section

Nondestmctive tests differ from methods of laboratory analysis and testing where specimens are generally sectioned, broken, damaged, or destroyed. Nondestmctive tests can be performed on materials, components, and stmctures or systems that actually are to be used. Thus, effective use of NDE requires engineering knowledge of the stmcture, the performance characteristics, and service environment, as well as the test method. More complete information on all of the topics discussed herein are available (1 6).

The primary focus during validation is validation of the content of the spreadsheet itself. We can now summarize the conclusions that have been reached for conditions of normal incidence about the light waves which pass through a general section of a uniaxial crystal. Many of the following studies, particularly those that measure changes by absorption or fluorescence, were made for a-lactalbumin, without corresponding studies on lysozyme that may have been used comparatively. One must consider the likelihood that some such studies have been attempted, but without success, since unsuccessful experiments seldom find their way into the literature. It can only be surmised that the conformational structure of lysozyme is sufficiently more resistant to change that such studies would have proved relatively unproductive. It is well established, in fact, that lysozyme does offer more resistance to denaturative change and to chemical alteration in general (Section 1X,E and F).

Furthermore, as in CHEC-II(1996), the majority of the heterocycles which fall under the auspice of this chapter contain silicon and, where this is the case, it has been elected to group them together instead of using the general section headings employed in other chapters. Accordingly, to simplify access for the reader, it has proved easier to present other heterocycles in order of the position of their key heteroatom in the periodic table.
