The following sections include the relevant sections of the complete Act and indicate those parts of the legislation within the different plant categories to which the inspections provided by the independent engineering inspection companies will conform. It should, however, be appreciated that while the inspections provided will fulfill the statutory requirements for inspection, the actual responsibilities under the various Acts to conform remains the responsibility of the plant owner/user. It must be appreciated that the interpretation of any Act is a matter for the local Health and Safety Inspectorate, who should be consulted at all times if doubt exists as to whether any item of machinery and plant requires inspection to comply with a statutory provision.

Health and Safety Inspectors (including Explosives Inspectors) are appointed by the HSE to ensure compliance with the relevant statutory provisions. The inspectors have very wide ranging powers, and this is another factor that contributes to fireworks safety.

Government safety inspectors will not routinely request that employers who voluntarily evaluate work sites for potential safety and health problems provide the findings to the government during safety and health inspections, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced today.

Helge Ryggvik (Chapter 15 in this volume) notes that the number of offshore inspections in the Gulf of Mexico has dropped from the peak of 7,000 in 1994 to approximately 5,000 in 2009. Shortly before the fatal Deepwater Horizon accident, Ry ik had the opportunity to meet with Troy Trosclair, at the time the leader of all offshore safety inspectors in the Gulf of Mexico, whom Ry ik found to be frustrated because he felt he was [at the time] under pressure to reduce the number of inspections on offshore installations (Chapter 15).

This section addresses additional requirements according to EN 60204-1 (lEC 204-1) for the electrical safety of industrial machines. I will point out some of the key electri-cai safety items that are often overlooked by the beginning machine safety inspector.
