Education higher

About 400 000 baccalaureates and 40 000 doctorates in chemistry have been awarded on American campuses in the past century. The enduring trend in the number of degrees conferred has been one of exponential increase. This trend is in no way unique to chemistry but rather is characteristic of the American education system. The rate of growth is greater than the exponential rate of increase of the population. [Pg.40]

While undergoing exponential growth the conferral of chemistry degrees has also been subject to a second trend relative decline within academe. Baccalaureates awarded annually in chemistry have dropped from roughly a tenth to a hundredth of all bachelors degrees conferred. [Pg.40]

A third, related trend has been the steady shift away from chemical education as vocational preparation and toward chemical education as cultural instrument. [Pg.40]

The present occasion seems opportune to direct attention to the fact that one of the most familiar, most leadily procurable and most cheaply produced of all oiganic materials is placed beyond the reach of many students by the heavy duty levied upon it. May I, in the name of teachers of organic chemistry, appeal to the Board of Inland Revenue, on behalf of scientific and technical education, to provide institutions for higher education in science with a limited quantity of pure alcohol free of duty, thereby placing schools of chemistry in this country in the same position as those on the Continent ... [Pg.360]

There is no more important product of higher education than graduates able to think and able to seek and find the truth. There is nothing more important to think about and discuss the truth about than our impacts on the chemistry of our Planet and the consequence of these impacts. Responsible environmental behavior ought to be one of the primary goals of general education. [Pg.477]
