Mine worker

Investigations on Mine Workers. Such investigations have been carried out in several countries. In a study in Yugoslavia (Kilibarda et al., 1968) on 20 uranium miners no increase of aberration frequencies were found against 7 control workers. In some mines of Finland "with a high level of radon and daughters" a small number of workers were investigated (Stenstrand, 1982). [Pg.493]

These results on mine workers showed that at a certain amount of exposure the increase of chromosome aberration frequencies is no longer linear. This could also be considered as a support of the hypothesis of inducing repair enzymes. [Pg.493]

The earlier exception for coal mines arose not from true health and safety considerations but from the political pressure of the United Mine Workers Union which saw all liquid fuels as a threat to job security. Diesel locomotives had cost the UMWA thousands of jobs. Electrically-driven vehicles and equipment, with lengthy power cables, derived... [Pg.445]

In the report by Santos et al. (1995) Po and °Pb concentrations in urine, hair and skin smear samples from individuals using phosphated fertilizers have been compared with a control group of occupationally unexposed individuals. Urine and hair samples of the test group showed slightly higher concentrations of "Po and °Pb than those observed for the control group. These concentrations remained, however, lower than those for uranium mine workers. Skin smear values indicated contamination by direct contact with dust from fertilizers and this may contribute to skin cancer induction in this risk population. [Pg.49]

In fact, an excess of manganese can create health problems. These problems include weakness, sleepiness, tiredness, emotional disturbances, and even paralysis. The only way to receive such a large dose is in a factory or mine. Workers may inhale manganese dust in the air. [Pg.339]

A familiar obstacle, his father, stood in the way. University studies were expensive a year at university cost nearly as much as the total annual earnings of the best-paid mine workers of the time. [Pg.6]

Sayers remained at the Bureau of Mines until a new interior secretary replaced him in 1947. While still in office as a lame duck, and (according to the syndicated newspaper columnist Drew Pearson) without checking with his superiors, Sayers sent Lewis a letter that the Mine Workers president used to justify a national coal strike.37 A few months later, he was rewarded by Lewis with the position of chairman of the medical board of the union s newly established health plan, which in the following years resisted recognition of black lung disease.38... [Pg.41]
