Plants requirements

To grow satisfactorily a plant needs warmth, light, water, carbon dioxide, oxygen and other chemical elements which it can obtain from the soil. [Pg.20]

Water is an essential part of all plant cells and it is also required in extravagant amounts for the process of transpiration. Water carries nutrients from the soil into and through the plant it also carries the products of photosynthesis from the leaves to wherever they are needed. It is also used to give the plant rigidity (turgor), is used in many of the biochemical pathways inside the plant, and is also used to regulate the temperature of the plant. Plants take up about 200 tonnes of water for every tonne of dry matter produced. [Pg.21]

The main plant foods are discussed more fully in Chapter 4 (fertilisers and manmes) and see also Table 1.2. [Pg.22]

4 MEASUREMENT OF SOLVENT EMISSIONS IN INDUSTRIAL PLANTS 18.1.4.1 Plant requirements [Pg.1209]

In spite of considerable reductions in the use of organic solvents, the worldwide-adopted ozone values in the troposphere are not being attained. It is crucial to apply consistent measures worldwide to reduce solvent emissions. [Pg.1209]

In Europe, for example, the Council Directive 1999/13/EG On limiting emissions of volatile organic compounds, due to the use of organic solvents in certain activities and installations [EU-VOC-Richtlinie] came into force on March 11, 1999. It has to be transferred into national laws within two years. The application area refers to activities in applying solvents, as enlisted in Appendix IIA of the EU-VOC-Richtlinie (Table 18.1.3). [Pg.1209]

In the future it will be difficult to avoid deterioration of certain characteristics such as viscosity, asphaltene and sediment contents, and cetane number. The users must employ more sophisticated technological means to obtain acceptable performance. Another approach could be to diversify the formulation of heavy fuel according to end use. Certain consuming plants require very high quality fuels while others can accept a lower quality. [Pg.241]

Gas fractionation plants require considerable investment and in many situations would not be economic. However, less complete NGL recovery methods may still prove cost effective. [Pg.256]

LNG plants require very high initial investments in the order of several billion dollars, and are therefore only viable in cases were large volumes of reserves (typically 10 Bscf) have been proven. [Pg.256]

The utihty iadustry utilizes fans typically from 6.7—10 m diameter ia banks of 8 to 12 fans ia wet cooling towers. These towers cool the water used to condense the steam from the turbiaes. Many towers may be needed ia large plants requiring as many as 50 to 60 fans 12 m in diameter. These fans typically utilize velocity recovery stacks to recoup some of the velocity pressure losses and convert it to useful static pressure work. [Pg.113]

AH gas-fired power plants require oxygen analy2ers to ensure that air has not been drawn into the piping system. Oxygen intake can lead to the presence of an explosive mixture in the pipeline before the fuel reaches the burner or combustor 2one. When gas-fired units are located in an enclosed area, multiple ultraviolet flame detectors are used to shut down equipment and flood the area with CO2 or a chemical fire suppressant whenever a spark or flame is detected. [Pg.17]

Saline waters, including seawater, contain, besides a variety of inorganic salts, also organic materials and various particles. They differ in composition from site to site, and also change with time as a result of both natural and human causes. Design and operation of desalination plants requires good knowledge of the saline water composition and properties (41,44). [Pg.242]

In a usual roaster gas at equiUbrium, the sulfate decomposes at ca 860°C, but it is difficult to avoid some sulfatization during cooling and indeed some plants require a degree of sulfation to maintain sulfate balance. [Pg.399]

However, additional requirements are imposed at some plants. Sometimes the process operator must acknowledge the alarm s return to normal. Some plants require that the alarm occurrence be reissued... [Pg.769]

A one-hoiir sampling period is generally required for both methods. Sampling periods are specified by the applicable standard e.g., standards applicable to triple-superphosphate plants require sampling of one hour or more. The standard may also specify a minimum sample volume that will dictate the minimum length of the sampling period. [Pg.2203]

If you suspect, or know, that you have a deflected shaft, or know that standard operating procedure in your plant requires controlling the flow in the pipes by opening and closing valves, then you have three options to reduce shaft deflection ... [Pg.136]

Determine the instrumentation, whieh exists, and their aetual loea-tion. Loeation of the instrumentation from the inlet or exit of the maehinery is important so that proper and effeetive eompensation may be provided for the various measured parameters. In some eases additional instrumentation will be needed. Experienee indieates that older plants require 10-20% more instrumentation depending upon the age of the plant. [Pg.652]

Controller emulation A simple applieation in eontrol is the use of neural networks to emulate the operation of existing eontrollers. It may be that a nonlinear plant requires several tuned PID eontrollers to operate over the full range of eontrol aetions. Or again, an LQ optimal eontroller has diffieulty in running in real-time. Figure 10.28 shows how the eontrol signal from an existing eontroller may be used to train, and to finally be replaeed by, a neural network eontroller. [Pg.361]

In Section 2.5.4, we found the availability of a repairable emergency generator (EG) by Markov methods. If a plant requires that two identical, independent EGs must both work for time T for success. What is the probability of this Assume the failure rates are A., A., and the repair rates are p, p-,. [Pg.66]

All process plants require both steam and electric power in their operations. Power is cither purchased from local utility companies or generated at the plant site. Even if power is generated by the process plant, arrangements for standby power from the local utility must be made for emergency purposes. Steam is rarely purchased but is generated at the plant for use in the process and as a driving medium for pumps and compressors. [Pg.168]

Chemical plants require a well-engineered system for fire protection. Many of the basic fire protection facilities must be incorporated into the original plant design in order to achieve maximum effectiveness. Fire extinguishing facilities and equipment should include ... [Pg.175]

Many operations in petrochemical plants require the absorption of components from gas streams into lean oils or solvents. The resultant rich oil is then stripped or denuded of the absorbed materials. The greatest use of this operation utilizes hydrocarbon materials, but the basic principles are applicable to other systems provided adequate equilibrium data are available. [Pg.108]

The following sections include the relevant sections of the complete Act and indicate those parts of the legislation within the different plant categories to which the inspections provided by the independent engineering inspection companies will conform. It should, however, be appreciated that while the inspections provided will fulfill the statutory requirements for inspection, the actual responsibilities under the various Acts to conform remains the responsibility of the plant owner/user. It must be appreciated that the interpretation of any Act is a matter for the local Health and Safety Inspectorate, who should be consulted at all times if doubt exists as to whether any item of machinery and plant requires inspection to comply with a statutory provision. [Pg.140]

If large compressor plant requires clear headroom for cranes, air intakes may have to mn through under floor piping or ducting. Intake ducts must be of a cross-sectional area sufficiently large to avoid excessive pressure drop, and the number of bends should be kept to a minimum. The ducts should be of non-corrosive material and care should be taken that extraneous material cannot enter the duct. The duct should be cleaned thoroughly before connection to the compressor. [Pg.547]
