Hard red winter (HRW) is an important bread wheat that accounts for more than 40% of the United States wheat crop and wheat exports. This fall-seeded wheat is produced in the Great Plains, which extend from the Mississippi River west to the Rocky Mountains, and from the Dakotas and Montana south to Texas. Significant quantities are also produced in California. HRW has moderately high protein content, usually averaging 11—12%, and good milling and baking characteristics. [Pg.354]

Zinc. Zinc deposits in the United States extend from Maine through the Appalachian Mountains, and west through the Mississippi Valley into the Rocky Mountain states. U.S. reserves are estimated to be 27 x t Zn (108). World reserves and resources are 135 and 110 x 10 t, respectively. The... [Pg.245]

The TOSCOAL Process. The Oil Shale Corp. (TOSCO) piloted the low temperature carbonization of Wyoming subbituminous coals over a two-year period in its 23 t/d pilot plant at Rocky Falls, Colorado (149). The principal objective was the upgrading of the heating value in order to reduce transportation costs on a heating value basis. Hence, the soHd char product from the process represented 50 wt % of the starting coal but had 80% of its heating value. [Pg.94]

Furthermore, 60—100 L (14—24 gal) oil, having sulfur content below 0.4 wt %, could be recovered per metric ton coal from pyrolysis at 427—517°C. The recovered oil was suitable as low sulfur fuel. Figure 15 is a flow sheet of the Rocky Flats pilot plant. Coal is fed from hoppers to a dilute-phase, fluid-bed preheater and transported to a pyrolysis dmm, where it is contacted by hot ceramic balls. Pyrolysis dmm effluent is passed over a trommel screen that permits char product to fall through. Product char is thereafter cooled and sent to storage. The ceramic balls are recycled and pyrolysis vapors are condensed and fractionated. [Pg.94]

The principal source of helium is certain natural gas fields. The helium contents of more than 10,000 natural gases in various parts of the world have been measured (9). Helium concentrations of a few are Hsted in Table 2. In the United States, recovery of helium is economical only for helium-rich gases containing more than about 0.3 vol % belium. Most of the United States helium resources are located in the midcontinent and Rocky Mountain regions, and about 89% of the known United States supply is in the Hugoton field in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas the Keyes field in Oklahoma the Panhandle and Cliffside fields in Texas and the Riley Ridge area in Wyoming (11). [Pg.5]

North America.. In the United States, lignite deposits are located in the northern Great Plains and in the Gulf states. Subbituminous coal is found along the Rocky Mountains. The western half of North Dakota has about 74% of the nation s resources, Montana 23%, Texas 2%, and Alabama and South Dakota about 0.5% each. The lignite resources to 914 m represent 28% of the total toimage of all coal deposits in the United States. The lower cost and low sulfur content have contributed to rapid growth in production. [Pg.154]

Transuranic Waste. Transuranic wastes (TRU) contain significant amounts (>3,700 Bq/g (100 nCi/g)) of plutonium. These wastes have accumulated from nuclear weapons production at sites such as Rocky Flats, Colorado. Experimental test of TRU disposal is planned for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) site near Carlsbad, New Mexico. The geologic medium is rock salt, which has the abiUty to flow under pressure around waste containers, thus sealing them from water. Studies center on the stabiUty of stmctures and effects of small amounts of water within the repository. [Pg.232]

Most of the best locatioas for wiad projects He outside Califomia. Several northern Rocky Mouataia states and Northern Plains states possess substantial resources. Also, the Northeast and Texas have considerable wiad resources. Ia all, about 14 states each possess a wiad eaergy poteatial that is equal to or greater than that of California. [Pg.107]

The South and North were the two largest timber-related secondary products manufacturing regions, adding 16,350 million (41%) and 15,549 million (30%) of value, respectively, in 1991 (Table 10). The Rocky Mountain and Pacific Coast regions combined added the remaining 20%. [Pg.334]

These pumps are used to lift deep groundwater or any other liquid from hard or rocky soil. Moreover, the liquid level may be so deep that it may prevent the use of a centrifugal pump. Theoretically, the maximum depth from which water can be lifted against atmospheric pressure is 9.8 m (32 feet). To lift water or any other liquid from... [Pg.170]

A more economical alternative is found in a submersible pump where the pump, directly coupled with the prime mover, is slid into the tubewell through narrow pipes. Narrow pipes are easy to sink into rocky terrain or very deep water levels. They are less expensive and are easy to install due to the elimination of the need for a pump house. Once the unit is slid into the well it requires little maintenance. (See Figures 7.5-7.7.) Such pumps have a standard centrifugal multistage arrangement, and the motors are required to work under water or any other liquid. These motors have an exclusive application for submersible pumps. [Pg.170]

The application and use of deep-well turbine and submersible pumps, is extensive and a choice will depend upon the depth of liquid and the rate of discharge. In rocky areas, where the digging of larger well cavity is a difficult task, submersible pumps provide an easy alternative. Similarly, for higher heads and where only a small quantity of liquid is to be pumped, these pumps are preferred. We discuss below the characteristics of these motors and the application of these pumps. [Pg.171]

In order to carry out a cost comparison of cathodic protection with the prolongation of service life of pipelines that it provides, the construction costs and the material costs of the pipeline have to be known. If there are no particular difficulties (e.g., having to lay the pipe in heavily built-up areas, river crossings, or rocky soil), the construction costs for a high-pressure DN 600 pipeline are about 10 DM km". If it is simply assumed that a pipeline has a useful life of 25 years without cathodic protection whereas with cathodic protection it has a life of at least 50 years, the... [Pg.496]
