Furthermore, 60—100 L (14—24 gal) oil, having sulfur content below 0.4 wt %, could be recovered per metric ton coal from pyrolysis at 427—517°C. The recovered oil was suitable as low sulfur fuel. Figure 15 is a flow sheet of the Rocky Flats pilot plant. Coal is fed from hoppers to a dilute-phase, fluid-bed preheater and transported to a pyrolysis dmm, where it is contacted by hot ceramic balls. Pyrolysis dmm effluent is passed over a trommel screen that permits char product to fall through. Product char is thereafter cooled and sent to storage. The ceramic balls are recycled and pyrolysis vapors are condensed and fractionated.

The deslimed pulp (<0.589 mm (—28 mesh)) of mica, feldspar, and quart2 is then fed to a froth flotation circuit where these materials are separated from each other either by floating in an acid circuit with rosin amine and sulfuric acid (2.5—4.0 pH), or an alkaline circuit (7.5—9.0 pH) with tall oil amine, goulac, rosin amine acetate, and caustic soda (see Eig. 2).

Punched steel plates are very robust, but have a low proportion of open area. They are often used for screening larger sizes of stone and in trommel screens (see section 5.5.2.3), where robustness is important. Increasingly, moulded decks made from rubber or polymers (e.g. polyurethane) are used because of their resistance to wear and corrosion, and their surface properties which reduce blinding and noise emission. Trommel screens are essentially rotating cylindrical mesh. These trommels rotate at a slight angle of inclination to facihtate the removal of material. Trommel screens can be supplied as a set of concentric screens of different aperture. The finest screens are the quickest to show wear.
