Sulfuric acid is an economical alternative source of acid and many commercial generators substitute concentrated sulfuric acid for HCl. Furthermore, the requited chloride ion needed as the reductant is already present or added as NaCl in the chlorate solution or crystal obtained from the chlorate manufacturer.
