Gulf States

North America.. In the United States, lignite deposits are located in the northern Great Plains and in the Gulf states. Subbituminous coal is found along the Rocky Mountains. The western half of North Dakota has about 74% of the nation s resources, Montana 23%, Texas 2%, and Alabama and South Dakota about 0.5% each. The lignite resources to 914 m represent 28% of the total toimage of all coal deposits in the United States. The lower cost and low sulfur content have contributed to rapid growth in production. 

Access to Psilocybe mushrooms is increasing. They grow naturally in the Gulf States and the Pacific Northwest. In other areas across the United States, the mushrooms are cultivated in laboratories or in homes with kits purchased over the Internet. Psilocybin mushrooms in the United States often sell for 2CM0 per one-eighth ounce. 

A Swiss-designed artificial island is planned near the equator (Figure 1.41) in the Gulf state of Ras Al-Khaimah. A 100-m diameter prototype is under construction. It is one tenth of the size of the planned solar island. The solar concentrators will convert circulating water into steam, which will produce both electricity and H2. The electricity will be used for plant operation, and the H2 will be sold as fuel. The designers feel that the plant will be cost competitive... 

Taking a different course than Algeria with its liquefied natural gas, the Gulf States have thus upgraded their natural resources and already account for 10 percent, 5 percent, and 4 percent of world production of methanol, ethylene, and polyethylene respectively. 

The southern maidenhair fern tends to be found on shady, moist slopes with calcium-rich soil in the Southeastern and Gulf states and the Rockies as far north as Utah and west to California. Northern maidenhair fern occurs most abundantly in Virginia, though scattered collections are known from other coastal areas, as well as from woodlands within North and South Carolina and Georgia, and as far north as Ontario. Western maidenhair is also known as five finger maidenhair, due to the appearance of the leaves at the ends of the stalks, and it is native to western North America. Species of maidenhair ferns can also be found in Europe, around the Mediterranean and in Japan. 

The countries referred to as the Gulf States represent the Persicui Gulf countries, namely Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar emd United Arab Emirates (UAE). 

The total population of all the Gulf States is less than 8 million. Table 1 shows the population breakdown by countries.

Unlike countries such as Russia (at the current moment), the Gulf States are financially sound with good liquidity . Of course, these countries are dependent on their oil sales and on the US dollar (exchange rates). The per capita income per annum indicates the Gulf States exceptional financial situation in comparison with other developing countries as shown in Table 2. 

According to comparative sales/market share of the multinational pharmaceutical companies in the Gulf States, it is foreseen that the market potential in the Gulf States is slightly less than US 1 billion plus or minus 10 percent per annum (approximately 5 to 6 percent of the total market potential in the entire Middle East including Turkey and Egypt, which is approximately US 15 to 20 billion per annum).

In comparison with other global regions, (except North America, South America and Western Europe), the Middle East is not severely affected by a lack of funds. Like many countries, the Gulf States rely on their main export commodity, oil in their cases. Relatively speaking (assuming that peace and harmony reign in Israel, Palestine, Iran and Iraq), the market is stable and medical care is well funded. 

Although all five Gulf States are rich in oil and have adequate financial resources, the predominant pharmaceutical needs are comparable to those of the majority of developing countries, which lack sufficient funds for medical care. There is a great need for the following items ... 

In all the Gulf States, pharmaceutical preparations (medicaments) are distributed by general practitioners (GPs), pharmacists and through the Ministry of Health (hereinafter referred to as the Health Authority) hospitals. Often, the government requirements, which are secured by tender, are voluminous compared with the quantity reaching the public via GPs and pharmacists.
