Recreational surfaces must provide certain performance characteristics with acceptable costs, lifetimes, and appearance. Arbitrary but useful distinctions may be made for classification purposes, depending on the principal function a covering intended primarily to provide an attractive surface for private leisure activities, eg, patio surfaces a surface designed for service in a specific sport, eg, track surfaces or a grass-like surface designed for a broad range of heavy-duty recreational activities, including professional athletics, eg, artificial turf for outdoor sports. 

A major portion of our water-based recreational activities occurs in the tliousands of lakes, reservoirs, and otlier small, relatively quiescent bodies of water. The ecosystems of lakes tlu-oughout tlie world are of primary concern in water qiuility management. The lakes and reservoirs vary from small ponds and dams to the magnificent and monumental large lakes of tlie world such as Lake Superior (one of the Great Lakes) and Lake Btiikal in tlie Soviet Union, the deepest lake in the world (1620 m 53 lO ft).

Because people everywhere tend to take their fun seriously, they spend freely on sports and recreational activities. The broad range of properties available from plastics has made them part of all types of sports and recreational equipment for land, water, and airborne activities. Roller-skate wheels are now abrasion- and wear-resistant polyurethane, tennis rackets are molded from specially reinforced plastics (using glass, aramid, graphite, or other fibers), skis are laminated with plastics, and so on. 

The first reports of plastic in the North Atlantic indicated the presence of 50-12,000 particles/km in the Sargasso Sea in 1972 (52) and from 0-14.1 particles per m in coastal waters of southern New England (42), where the main source was river-borne effluents from plastic fabrication plants (44). Plastic objects discarded from boats and from recreational activities on beaches were the main sources of debris in Narragansett Bay, being deposited at a rate of 9.6 g m of beach front per month (53). During a detailed survey off the southeast coast of the United States (43, 54), fragments of plastic were present in about 70% of the samples collected from the waters of the continental shelf, the continental slope and the Gulf Stream between Florida and Cape Cod, 50% of those from the Caribbean Sea, and 60% of those from the Antilles Current. Since unprocessed plastic was more prevalent in continental shelf waters and fabricated objects were common offshore but rare near land, the authors surmised... 

The available water resources are linked to human health in several ways water for drinking, hygiene, recreational activities and food production. As water resources decrease as a consequence of droughts or increased demand, the need to use water sources of poor quality appears, and consequently the risk of an increase in the occurrence of outbreaks of infectious diseases related to water can be higher.

In CRA with alcohol-dependent patients, reinforcement of disulfiram compliance is one of the primary components of treatment, such that use of alcohol loses its reinforcing aspects and, in fact, becomes aversive. Children may be exposed to lead from other hobby or recreational activities that are not as obviously dangerous. For example, two case studies (one in North Carolina and one in Arizona) of lead poisoning in children from homes in which environmental surveys indicated no identifiable lead hazards have been reported. More extensive investigations revealed that both children had been observed on several occasions with pool cue chalk in their mouths. Subsequent chemical analysis of 23 different types of pool cue chalk identified three types as having lead concentrations in excess of 7,000 mg/kg (Miller et al. 1996).

As was the case with the first edition, this book is dedicated to my irreplaceable wife, Angeline, who persisted in encouraging me in this and other scientific efforts that often left little time for recreational activities. In addition, I dedicate it to my daughter, Tracy, whose strong encouragement and occasional harassment convinced me to write the first edition. 

From the human perspective, HABs are problematic because they cause (1) risks to human health, (2) loss of natural or cultured seafood resources, (3) impairment of tourism and recreational activities, and (4) damage to noncommercial marine resources and wildlife. Exposure pathways include (1) consumption of toxic shellfish that have accumulated phytoplankton toxins filtered from the water, (2) consumption of tropical fish that have accumulated phytoplankton toxins (ciguatera), (3) inhalation of aerosolized toxins ejected from the sea surface, and (4) skin contact resulting in irritations due to allergy-like reactions. Harmful health effects from acute exposures have been relatively well studied. Less well known are the health effects resulting from chronic exposures to low toxin levels. This is of particular concern with regards to marine mammals and seabirds. 

Recreation and tourism are of growing importance in many mountain regions. They are, to a good part, based on multifaceted intact landscapes in which waters clearly play an important role. Hence, waters should convey intact natural sceneries on the one hand, while increasingly experiencing stress from recreational activities. 

Dermal contact to cresols may occur during recreational activities at natural waterways containing either naturally or anthropogenically generated cresols. However, cresols are expected to degrade rapidly in surface water. 

Sedimentation and siltation can have a number of harmful effects on the environment. For example, as sediments accumulate in a river, stream, harbor, hay, or other body of water, they may disrupt transportation on the water and limit its use for swimming, hshing, boating, and other recreational activities. In some bodies of water, dredging has become a virtually nonstop operation in order to keep them open to shipping and other commercial and recreational operations. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers alone dredges more than 78 million cubic yards (60 million cubic meters) of sediment each year at an annual cost of nearly 200 million. 

Acute gouty arthritis interferes seriously with work, recreational activities and mobility. Between flare and intercritical gout 25% of patients still report pain most of the time for unexplained reasons. Therefore, maintaining low levels of serum uric acid (SUA) in chronic gout is important to prevent flare of acute gouty arthritis.

Human activities harmfully influence the environment and nature in many ways. The production of undesirable wastewater, waste gas, and liquid plus solid residues seems to be inevitable during chemical processes. The public is more sensitive to pollution of the aquatic environment and the depletion of clean water resources, because they have an immediate impact on daily routine and recreational activities. However, air pollution has an adverse impact on our health in the short and long term, and the problems of the greenhouse effect and the destruction of stratospheric ozone could extinguish life from the face of the Earth. These problems are enhanced by overpopulation and urbanization. Today, urban areas can be seen as monsters that consume large amounts of energy, matter, and freshwater and release all kinds of waste into the environment.
