RANGE Program

Typical features of a plywood resole formulation are a formaldehyde-to-phenol molar ratio in the 2.0 1 to 2.5 1 range, programmed formaldehyde, an alkali content from 4 to 8 wt% (calculated as sodium hydroxide), and pan solids of 40-50%. Resins used for laminated veneer lumber (LVL) tend to be similar to plywood resins in composition and molecular weight, though they are often designed for high-end cure speed. 

The results of this examination of the PMN requirements of TSCA has prompted EPA to launch a wide-ranging program to reduce the regulatory burden imposed on industry by this provision of the law and, concurrently, in cooperation with industry, to educate the small business segment with respect to the goals and requirements of TSCA.

In addition to this concern about university employment, there has been considerable concern expressed about the decline in longer-range programs, particularly basic research, in industrial laboratories. This is regrettable principally because it slows down the accumulation of a knowledge reservoir derived from "directed basic research," and may well have an effect on our industrial productivity ten years from now. This cannot easily be compensated for by seeking the same manpower effort at universities. 

Industrial research is geared to perceived business opportunities and business climate, so that current activities indicate some shifting to shorter-range programs and to processes intended to lower costs.

On the other hand, if At is too short, the controlled variable may not change enough between samples to escape truncation. Again, the choice of At will have already been dictated by other requirements-reset range, programming, etc.
