Vending machines

Vending machines are especially popular in Japan, Korea and the Far East. It is estimated that in Japan about 2.5 million of these appliances are in the field with a replacement market of about 0.4 million pieces/year. 

Vending machines are quite a demanding application for VIP, since the panel operating temperature is cycled between room temperature and 60-70 °C and the lifetime is 5 years. As already discussed, the high temperature promotes higher diffusion and outgassing rates and provides additional mechanical stress to the envelope. 

Ageing tests have been carried out by vending machines manufacturers to assess VIP usability and reliability in this application. 

the deterioration of the thermal conductivity, due to the pressure increase, is quite dramatic in the getterless panels both at 23 and 60 °C. As expected, the thermal conductivity increase is much more rapid for the panels aged at 60 °C than for the panel kept at room temperature. Only minimal differences are measnred in the panels containing the COMBOGETTER, which could compensate for the increased gas load at both temperatures. 

Large vacuum insulated containers, ships and trucks are under evaluation by various companies, mainly in Europe and Japan.

PPO forms one of a group of rigid, heat-resistant, more-or-less selfextinguishing polymers with a good electrical and chemical resistance, low water absorption and very good dimensional stability. This has led to a number of applications in television such as tuner strips, microwave insulation components and transformer housings. The excellent hydrolytic stability has also led to applications in water distribution and water treatment applications such as in pumps, water meters, sprinkler systems and hot water tanks. It is also used in valves of drink vending machines.

Homogeneous alloys of metals with atoms of similar radius are substitutional alloys. For example, in brass, zinc atoms readily replace copper atoms in the crystalline lattice, because they are nearly the same size (Fig. 16.41). However, the presence of the substituted atoms changes the lattice parameters and distorts the local electronic structure. This distortion lowers the electrical and thermal conductivity of the host metal, but it also increases hardness and strength. Coinage alloys are usually substitutional alloys. They are selected for durability—a coin must last for at least 3 years—and electrical resistance so that genuine coins can be identified by vending machines. 

In the U.S. the per capita consumption of coffee has declined by one-third since 1960. Parallel with this has been a change in the proportion of Robusta coffees imported into the U.S. In 1950 only 6% of the imported coffees were Robustas whereas by 1975, 35% were Robustas. In the 1950s, Robustas were mainly used for instant coffee now they also constitute a significant part of the roast and ground coffee blends. These Robustas are used to the highest extent in vending machines, restaurants, decaffeinated blends, and instant coffees. 

As with any specification, it is possible to write invariants that cannot be satisfied by an implementor. In your spec of a Sludge vending machine, you can write an invariant that the weather is always sunny in northern England but I cannot deliver such a device.9 But... 

Let us revisit the example in Section 4.2.2, Preview Documenting a Refinement, on restocking of a vending machine (see Figure 8.4). Suppose that the warehouse inlet door for a product can jam when closed. If this outcome is an interesting exception at the abstract level, it could have been specified as such on the joint action. In the refinement, the appropriate sequence can be mapped to this abstract exception action.

By playing around with proportions, metal workers can readily modify the properties of an alloy. For example, in designing the Sacagawea dollar coin, shown in Figure 18.15, the U.S. Mint needed a metal that had a gold color—so that it would be popular—and also had the same electrical characteristics as the Susan B. Anthony dollar coin—so that the new coin could substitute for the Anthony coin in vending machines. 

Meanwhile, it has been pointed out that soft drink companies plaster their logos everywhere, sponsor giveaways designed to serve as ads, and spend tens of millions of dollars where kids are a captive audience, such as in school cafeterias, where vending machines selling sodas are often installed to produce school revenue. A maker of caffeinated water says, The only market available is to start them out younger and younger. ...
