Mueller cells

In addition to the neuronal cell types responsible for visual signal transmission the retina has several types of supporting cells, similar in function to the RPE cells supporting the photoreceptor outer segments. The most important of these are the Mueller cells, whose principal role appears to be to buffer and balance electrolyte concentrations in the extracellular space, in response to the activity of the retinal neurons, especially photoreceptors. 

Electroretinogram (ERG) The ERG is a device designed to measure the electrical response of the eye to brief, high intensity flashes. In this study, the ERG was used to determine the association between JP8 exposure and retinal Mueller cell function. Subjects who volunteered for this protocol underwent an ERG as part of their evaluation. Since the hypothesized retinal changes are associated with chronic JP8 exposure, the ERG procedure was accomplished only once on the enrollee selected. In addition to comparisons between the exposed and unexposed groups, ERG results were compared with normative data.

Changes in the retina have also been associated with chronic low level lead exposure, also at 300 ppm and 1000 ppm Pb. These include necrosis of photoreceptor inner segments, perikarya and synaptic endings, Mueller cells, and occasional ganglion cells (Santos-Anderson et al., 1980).

The entire iron-porphyrin-protein complex is called a cytochrome and such proteins are important electron-transfer components of cells. Generally, access to the macromolecular region in which the oxidation reactions occur is via a hydrophobic channel through the protein (Mueller et al., 1995). As a result, organic substrates are transferred from aqueous solution into the enzyme s active site primarily due to their hydrophobicity and are limited by their size. This important feature seems very appropriate hydrophobic molecules are selected to associate with this enzyme, and these are precisely the ones that are most difficult for organisms to avoid accumulating from a surrounding aquatic environment.
