Periodic Inspections

Maintenance embraces regular inspection, periodic examination by competent persons , and repairs. Accidents may arise as a result of the lack of maintenance, during maintenance, and as a consequence of faulty maintenance. Preventive maintenance can be a legal requirement for, e.g., pressure vessels/boilers, lifting gear, power presses. A system is required for monitoring compliance witli scheduled preventive maintenance programmes, backed up by in-service inspection. Breakdown... 

The slow rotation of the drum and reciprocation of the agitator reduce maintenance requirements to a minimum but the following should be inspected periodically. The strip liner of the trunnion bearing at the valve end will normally wear at the lower half. However, in situations when the slurry has a high specific gravity, the drum has a tendency to become buoyant causing wear to the upper half. 

Heaters and furnaces should also be designed in accordance with standards and codes. Boilers and heating units must be inspected periodically in accordance with codes, insurance requirements and state regulations. Proper controls, interlocks and fail-safe instnunentation must be provided. The heaters should also be provided with sight glasses for flame observation, monitoring devices for flame-out detection, and temperature alarms. 

Inspection period. All relevant documents, the installation and its components are visually and physically examined, with all energy sources isolated. The commissioning program is finalized. 

Failure times are typically recorded to the nearest hour, day, month, hundred miles, etc. This is so because the method of measurement has limited accuracy or because the data are rounded. For example, if units are inspected periodically for failure, the exact time of failure is not known but only the period in which the failure occurred. For data plotting, the amount that failure times are rounded off should be considerably smaller than the spread in the distribution of time to failure.

Maintenance operations, particularly those which are non-routine, require a sound system of work with strict administrative procedures, e.g. permit-to-work, to avoid risks arising from modifications to established safe practices. A permit-to-work should be used wherever the method by which a job is done is likely to be critical to the safety of the workers involved, nearby workers, or the public it is required whenever the safeguards provided in normal operations are no longer available. Laboratories should have fire extinguishers and safety showers. Respirators should be available for emergencies. Emergency equipment should be kept in a central location and must be inspected periodically.

To test the corrosion protection conferred by LMP - produced films, glass microscope slides bearing 5000 A - thick layers of aluminium (by vacuum evaporation) were overcoated with P-PHMDSO films. Such treatment results in a residue that is salt-based, e.g., magnesium sulfate from sulfuric acid. Thus, dry chemical agents should be readily available in areas where such materials are stored and handled, for example, tank track transfer sites. The application systems or equipment for application of dry chemical agents should have their locations marked. These areas should be kept clear, marked, and inspected periodically in the same manner as fire extinguishers. 

Inspection and Preventive Maintenance When a steam curtain is to be used to mitigate the consequences of a flammable material release, it must be treated as if it were part of the site s firefighting system. This means that a managerial system must be in place to ensure that the steam curtain system is inspected periodically. Deficiencies should be reported and repaired promptly. Follow-up investigations must be made to ensure that the inspections, deficiency reporting, and repairs occur in a timely manner. If the system must be shut down for the repairs, the same procedures that would be followed for a sprinkler or deluge system shutdown should be utilized.

Avoid contact between metals with different potentials. Complete isolation of one from the other should be made and inspected periodically. To predict or avoid galvanic corrosion, the potential of every metal or conductor should be evaluated as a function of time in the intended medium. The variation of the properties at the interface should be carefully evaluated as a function of time. 

The initial inspection shall ensure that the type of protection of the apparatus and its installation are appropriate. As a rule, initial inspections shall be detailed inspections. Periodic inspections are of the visual or close type. They shall detect all the factors effecting the deterioration of apparatus, e.g. corrosion, exposure to chemicals or solvents, accumulation of dust or dirt, water ingress, exposure to excessive ambient temperature, mechanical damage, unauthorized modifications or adjustments and inappropriate maintenance.
