Risk avoidance

Risk avoidance involves eliminating the cause of the hazard. This is accomplished by changes in the inherent risk features of the process or facility. Risk reduction concerns the provision of prevention or protective measures that will lessen the consequences of a particular accidental event. [Pg.6]

Risk avoidance often faces conflicts in objectives. In this way substance innovations for improved fire and explosion protection in the second half of the last century also made a major contribution to many environmental and health risks discussed today CFCs, PCB, chlorinated solvents, brominated flame retardants and also cutting oils in emulsion form must be mentioned at this point. This means that chemical/technical innovation originally aimed to achieve more operational safety. Additional improvements related to environmental or health aspects were not taken into account at the time of the innovation. [Pg.16]

Risk management is understood in a broad sense in this context i.e. risk prevention or risk avoidance, dealing with accepted risks (risk management in a narrower sense) or reduction of intolerable risks. [Pg.51]

Since both the 1938 Act and the 1962 Amendments were passed in the wake of tragedies, they were oriented towards risk-avoidance the FDA is primarily required to prevent harm from drugs and at present has no congressional mandate to promote the improvement of health or to maximize the benefit obtainable from drugs. [Pg.129]

Risk avoidance. While avoiding risks may sound like a logical approach, it is often impractical for most risks in a business environment. For example, most pharmacies cannot (and would not want to) avoid dispensing prescriptions despite the inherent risks involved in the process. However, there may be situations where not offering a specific good or service with an unreasonable risk may be the most prudent action. Many pharmacies choose simply not to perform sterile compounding services rather than incur the expense and risks associated with the preparation of these products. [Pg.491]

Based on knowledge of chance and effect (risk characterization), a first risk classification can be made. This will offer some insight into the priorities on risk avoidance or reduction, but it might leave a number of risks open for further risk analysis. Risk communication through the label or by other means then might become necessary. [Pg.394]

Cyclopentyl methyl ether (CPME) is another alternative to typical ethereal solvents such as diethyl ether, THF, DME and dioxane. At present it is not bio-sourced but it is mentioned here as it has many advantageous properties as a direct replacement for ethers. Most importantly, the rate of peroxide formation is very slow and therefore, CPME is green in terms of risk avoidance and other criteria. Its use in a range of classical and modern synthetic procedures has been reported. ... [Pg.109]

Quality assurance (QA) groups often desire a 100% guarantee of quality, leading to risk avoidance and promoting over-validation in the form of additional testing... [Pg.344]

As indicated previously, decision makers are generally risk avoiders. Additional risk, as measured by the variance of the figure of merit, is to be avoided whenever possible. Thus there are two criteria to be considered simultaneously the figure of merit, for example, present worth, as measured by the expected value (mean, /r) of the distribution and the riskiness of the outcome as measured by the variance (cr ) of the distribution. The former is to be maximized, and the latter is to be minimized. [Pg.2376]

Clearly, process safety performance is important to both risk avoidance and financial performance. Make process safety a key part of due diligence. The due-diligence team needs a process safety representative to be sure the right information is requested and once the information is received that it is properly evaluated. Oftentimes the evaluation centers around performance and liabilities incidents, inspections, lawsuits, fines, etc. These are important lagging indicators. The leading organizational indicators are also important. Some of these are ... [Pg.130]

To repeat the previous quote from ISO/IEC Guide 51, There can be no absolute safety some risk will remain, defined in this Guide as residual risk. In the real world, attaining zero risk, whether in the design process or in operations, is not possible. Nevertheless, the residual risk, after risk avoidance, elimination, or control measures are taken, should be acceptable, as judged by the decision makers. [Pg.274]

Ensuring that a high level of risk avoidance, elimination, or control is achieved in new or altered facilities and equipment requires considerable effort. Ideally, safety practitioners should be a part of, and influential in, the design processes the earlier, the better. More specifically, organizations need to work toward... [Pg.283]

In the discussions, possible risk avoiding or mitigating actions have been addressed, with basis in the companies existing practice. [Pg.387]

The application of safety management techniques and skills through a program of activities directed at risk avoidance, loss prevention, and loss reduction aimed at minimizing loss from the risks of the business. [Pg.188]
