A typical lubrication oil system is shown in Figure 15-1. Oil is stored in a reservoir to feed the pumps and is then cooled, filtered, distributed to the end users, and returned to the reservoir. The reservoir can be heated for startup purposes and is provided with local temperature indication, a high-tempera-ture alarm and high/low level alarm in the control room, a sight glass, and a controlled dry nitrogen purge blanket to minimize moisture intake.

Industrial equipment is a continuing area of development for plastics. Pipes, pumps, valves and sight glasses, made from such materials as PVC, PTFE and poly-4-methylpent-l-ene, have become well established on account of their corrosion resistance. The nylons are used for such diverse applications as mine conveyor belts and main drive gears for knitting machines and paper-making equipment. These and other materials are widely used where such features as toughness, abrasion resistance, corrosion resistance, non-stick properties, electrical insulation capability and transparency are of importance. 

Applications include flow meter parts, transparent housing for electrical equipment, sight glasses. X-ray apparatus windows, gear wheels, racks, counters and containers for solvents. 

In ordinary operation only condensate and non-condensed gases are removed from the exit steam chest. The connection for feeding the liquid to be evaporated may be attached to the body at any convenient point (D), but the discharge for thick liquor is usually in the center of the bottom (E). Suitable brackets are cast on the bottom to rest on the supporting steel. Most evaporators are provided with sight glasses.

In category (1), closed piping with a sight glass should be used rather than an open fuimel. 

Ignition pulse generator including pulse generator with button, low tension cable, coil electrode and sight glass, if required. 

Piping systems should be designed to minimize the use of components that are likely to leak or fail. Sight glasses and flexible connectors such as hoses and bellows should be eliminated wherever possible. Where these devices must be used, they must be specified in detail so they are structurally robust, compatible with process fluids, and installed to minimize the risk of external damage or impact. 

If possible, eliminate inherently weak equipment like sight glasses, hoses, rotameters, bellows, expansion joints, and most plastic equipment. The spare parts consumption from the shop and warehouse will indicate what is wearing out. 

Failures of level glasses and sight glasses have caused many serious incidents. A leak of ethylene and an explosion that destroyed a plant may have been due to a level glass failure [2],... 

These cocks contain a ball, which will isolate the sight glass if the glass breaks.
