Standard Test Methods for Tire Yarns, Cords, and Woven Fabrics. ASTM standard D885M-94 includes test methods for characterizing tire cord twist, break strength, elongation at break, modulus, tenacity, work-to-break, toughness, stiffness, growth, and dip pickup for industrial filament yams made from organic base fibers, cords twisted from such yams, and fabrics woven from these cords that are produced specifically for use in the manufacture of pneumatic tires. These test methods apply to nylon, polyester, rayon, and aramid yams, tire cords, and woven fabrics. [Pg.90]

Poly(vinyl acetate) emulsions are used to prime-coat fabrics to improve the adhesion of subsequent coatings or to make them adhere better to plastic film. Plasticized emulsions are appHed, generally by roUer-coating, to the backs of finished mgs and carpets to bind the tufts in place and to impart stiffness and hand. Internal Structure of Silk and Linen. Triangular-shaped silk filaments (called brins and composed of the protein fibroin) are embedded in a second protein (sericin) to form the bave unit. Microscopic examination of fabrics woven with the silk bave unit and subsequently cleaned of sericin reveals paired brin filaments. Fibroin contains 16 amino acids, and more than 80 of the polymer is composed of glycine, alanine, and serine only (6). Their small side groups allow chains of these amino acids to pack together closely to form the crystalline portions of the fiber. The bulkier amino acids, such as tyrosine, disrupt crystal order and produce the amorphous areas of the internal structure of the fiber. [Pg.278]

These materials are generally used as replacements for lower cost antimony trioxide in latex compounds used for textile fabrics, non-wovens, adhesives, and various other applications. Unlike antimony trioxide, Nyacol materials will not settle out, will not clog spray guns, will more easily impregnate fabrics and paper and will contribute no whitening effect. Fluorochemical products are expensive and have a tendency to provide a harsh hand on the treated fabric whether woven or nonwoven. NORANE 110 repellent reduces the amount of fluorochemical needed while at the same time softening the substrate, improving drape and sewability of the fabric. Ruorocarbon treatment generally improves the penetration resistance of porous fabrics, both woven and nonwoven, to liquids and particles. The fluorocarbon reduces die differences between the resistances of 100% cotton and various cotton/polyester blends. Durable press finishes reduce penetration resistance to liquids.
