Woven fabric-reinforced composites

Reprinted from Gao F, et al. Composites Sci Technol 1999 59 123-136, Damage accumulation in woven fabric CFRP (carhon frhre-reinforced plastic) laminates under tensile loading Part 1 - Observations of damage , with permission from Elsevier Science.  [Pg.8]

Clearly, the mechanical properties of woven fabric-reinforced composites are dominated by the type of fibre used, the weaving parameters, and the stacking and orientation of the various layers. However, there are additional subtleties which also affect composite performance. For example, some authors have noted the possibility of slightly altered mechanical properties depending on whether the yams are twisted prior to weaving in addition, damage accumulation under static and cyclic loading is different in laminates fabricated from twisted or untwisted yam.  [Pg.9]

Films were produced for experimentation by melt (2) or solution (6) processes developed in our laboratory. The melt process is similar to commercial processes for producing composite parts from unidirectional pre-impregnated tape. Woven fabric reinforced composites are impregnated by submerging the fabric in an epoxy solution. Thus, the solution process which is primarily emphasized in this study provides additional information to characterize and compare matrices produced by the two processes. [Pg.2]

As compared to laminated composite, there is no doubt that the impact tolerance of the 3-D woven fabric reinforced polymer composite has been enhanced dramatically due to the 3-D network structme and the improved transverse shear resistance. However, it is clear that even repeated low velocity impact can cause significant damage. Therefore, tike laminated composite and sandwich composite, 3-D woven fabric reinforced polymer composite also calls for self-healing capabilities. [Pg.7]

Next, we will present applications of the CTH scheme in several real-world composite stractures. They arc fiber reinforced syntactic foam cored sandwich structures, sandwich stractures with a continuous fiber reinforced grid stiffened syntactic foam core, and 3-D woven fabric reinforced polymer composite structures. Of course, the core or the polymer composite is based on the same thermosetting PSMP as discussed above. [Pg.244]
