Composites Woven fabric prepreg

During prepregging (Fig. 6) the woven-, braided- or non-erimped fabric textile gets coated with resin. Afterwards the composite - now called prepreg - gets heated up to lower the viseosity of the resin. Thus, the resin can penetrate into the yam. Heated or unheated squeeze rollers can full the resin more over into the yarn and force the penetration. Depending on the maehine and the produeer... [Pg.171]

The most recent development is the sharp increase during the past decade in the use of non-metallic composites as structural components. These materials are prepared from so-called prepregs based on undirectional or woven fabrics composed of aramid, glass, or carbon fibers, and for the most part impregnated with thermosetting epoxy formulations. To keep pace with this development, compatible adhesives have been designed that can be either (1) co-cured with the prepegs, or (2) used to bond cured composite to itself, to metallic substrates, or to honeycomb. [Pg.714]

Manufacturers of composite structures have traditionally used prepreg tape to manufacture structural components. Fibres are initially combined into unidirectional tows (bundles) of fibres combined into fabrics, e.g. by weaving or knitting. The vast majority of the tows employed in woven, braided or knitted reinforcements comprise low twist or untwisted continuous filament yams. Three-dimensional technical textiles can be produced by weaving [5], knitting [6] and braiding [7] or as non-crimp fabrics. [Pg.56]

Thiokol-TCR Composites Corp., Ogden, Utah, USA— manufacture prepreg tow for filament winding, non-woven, UD tapes, braids and fabrics. In 1998, changed name to Cordant Technologies Inc. [Pg.1130]

For various applications, carbon fiber staple yarns are processed into woven and noncrimp fabrics, which are used for building components and as prepregs. Textile structures of carbon filaments are used in composite plastics and with fiber-reinforced concrete. Furthermore, short fibers down to 6 mm in length are used. [Pg.76]
