Consumer product

Various microdevices, that is, MEMS products, have also found applications in various consumer products, that is, sport shoes with automatic cushioning control, digital tire pressure gauges, smart toys, washers with water-level controls, and so on. [Pg.10]

The CPSC uses a mixture of regulations and standards (including banning of certain characteristics, for example, small piece parts are banned from products for children younger than 3 years old), testing, and recalls to ensure safety of consumer products. The way the CPSC certifies children s products is illustrative of the approval process. The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 requires that almost all children s products sold in the United States, whether imported or produced domestically, must [Pg.50]

In the end, the consumer benefits, as well as the product supplier, because recalls are minimized and brand protection is strengthened. We all benefit from this process. The automotive industry is probably one of the highest visibility manufacturers that [Pg.51]

They are classified apart in this text because their use differs from that of petroleum solvents they are used as raw materials for petrochemicals, particularly as feeds to steam crackers. Naphthas are thus industrial intermediates and not consumer products. Consequently, naphthas are not subject to governmental specifications, but only to commercial specifications that are re-negotiated for each contract. Nevertheless, naphthas are in a relatively homogeneous class and represent a large enough tonnage so that the best known properties to be highlighted here. [Pg.275]

It is also extensively used in the production of paper products, dyestuffs, textiles, petroleum products, medicines, antiseptics, insecticides, food, solvents, paints, plastics, and many other consumer products. [Pg.41]

HPLC is routinely used for both qualitative and quantitative analyses of environmental, pharmaceutical, industrial, forensic, clinical, and consumer product samples. Figure 12.30 shows several representative examples. [Pg.586]

Acetone is used as a solvent and as a reaction intermediate for the production of other compounds which are mainly used as solvents and/or intermediates for consumer products. [Pg.99]

Air contaminants are emitted to the indoor air from a wide variety of activities and consumer products, some of which are summarized in Table 11. Most indoor activities produce some types of pollutants. When using volatile products or engaging in the activities Hsted, care should be exercised to minimize exposure through proper use of the product and by providing adequate ventilation. [Pg.382]

Regulatory Legislation. In Febmary 1978, the Consumer Products Safety Commission approved changes in the FF-3 and FF-5 standards for children s sleepwear. It eliminated the melt—drip time limit and coverage for sizes below 1 and revised the method of testing the trim. This permits the use of untreated 100% nylon and 100% polyester for children s sleepwear (157—162). [Pg.492]

Food processing firms producing heat-preserved, frozen, dehydrated, or chemically preserved foods may be classified by their finished products. Companies may be further grouped based on whether they process raw materials into ingredients, such as in poultry and meat processing plants, or whether they take these ingredients and convert them to ready-to-eat consumer products. [Pg.458]

Consumer Products. Laser-based products have emerged from the laboratories and become familiar products used by many millions of people in everyday circumstances. Examples include the supermarket scaimer, the laser printer, and the compact disk. The supermarket scanner has become a familiar fixture at the point of sale in stores. The beam from a laser is scaimed across the bar-code marking that identifies a product, and the pattern of varying reflected light intensity is detected and interpreted by a computer to identify the product. Then the information is printed on the sales sHp. The use of the scanner can speed checkout from places like supermarkets. The scanners have usually been helium—neon lasers, but visible semiconductor lasers may take an impact in this appHcation. [Pg.17]

The compact disk player has become a very widespread consumer product for audio reproduction. The information is stored along tracks on the disk in the form of spots of varying reflectivity. The laser beam is focused on a track on the surface of the disk, which is rotated under the beam. The information is recovered by detecting the variations in the reflected light. The compact disk offers very high fideHty because there is no physical contact with the disk. This appHcation has usually employed a semiconductor laser source operating at a wavelength of around 780 nm. Tens of millions of such compact disk players are produced worldwide every year. [Pg.17]

For 1976 the Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated that the total of all flame producers, ie, book matches (made from cardboard), iadividual (wooden) stick matches, and lighters, amounted to 645 x 10 of such fire resources or "lights." Paper matches accounted for about 65% or 420 x 10 , lighters for 25% or 160 X 10 , and wooden matches, the remaining 10% or 65 x 10 . ... [Pg.3]

The principal U.S. market for methacrylate resins is for glazing and skylights. Other significant markets include consumer products, transportation signs and lighting fixtures, plumbing (spas, tubs, showers, sinks, etc), and panels and siding (106,107). [Pg.270]

Synthetic Zeolites. Many new crystalline 2eohtes have been synthesi2ed and several fulfill important functions in the chemical and petroleum industries and in consumer products such as detergents. The stmctural formula of a 2eohte is based on the crystal unit cell, the smallest unit of stmcture,... [Pg.446]

Risk-Based Inspection. Inspection programs developed using risk analysis methods are becoming increasingly popular (15,16) (see Hazard ANALYSIS AND RISK ASSESSMENT). In this approach, the frequency and type of in-service inspection (IS I) is determined by the probabiUstic risk assessment (PRA) of the inspection results. Here, the results might be a false acceptance of a part that will fail as well as the false rejection of a part that will not fail. Whether a plant or a consumer product, false acceptance of a defective part could lead to catastrophic failure and considerable cost. Also, the false rejection of parts may lead to unjustified, and sometimes exorbitant, costs of operation (2). Risk is defined as follows ... [Pg.123]

Translating odor modifiers into consumer products results in forms, such as soHds, Hquids, and aerosols, for a market defined as products "for the nose." This includes products that cover up or eliminate odors, perfume the home, or cleanse the air. Such products thus defined were reported to have sales in 1992 of just under 2 biUion. The categories of this market can be broken out as traditional air fresheners, cat Utter products, aroma care, air purification, and disinfectant in both consumer and industrial appUcations. [Pg.294]

Higher olefins are versatile chemical intermediates for a number of important industrial and consumer products, providing a better standard of living with low environmental impact (qv) in many commercial uses. These uses can be characterized by carbon number and by chemical stmcture. [Pg.435]
